NFU Mutual, the UK’s leading rural insurer, has appointed Laura Holman under a Business and Administrative Apprenticeship scheme coordinated by Bicton College.

The year-long scheme awards apprentices with an NVQ Level 2 in Business and Administration alongside a comprehensive training schedule with a suitable business partnership.

Richard Pym, Agent for NFU Mutual in Crediton, said: “We can see great potential for business growth in our area and this apprenticeship scheme allows us to pursue that potential and maintain the high levels of service received by our members.”

As a new apprentice, 19-year old Laura has taken on administrative and customer service duties to support the overall running of the business. Under the terms of her apprenticeship, Laura will receive further training and support from BictonCollege via monthly meetings at NFU Mutual’s Exeter Road office.

Commenting on the experience so far, Laura said: “Growing up on a farm means I’m well suited to work for the UK’s leading rural insurer as I have the knowledge to support the local, rural community. I feel extremely lucky to have this opportunity and can’t wait to see what the future brings.”

The apprenticeship scheme has also been backed by local MP, Mel Stride who will join representatives from the college to visit Laura at her new place of work.

Mel Stride, MP for Central Devon, said: "Apprenticeships really matter - providing young people with the skills, experience and confidence for pursuing a worthwhile and rewarding career.

“Agriculture is a key focus for the support provided by government through its funding of apprenticeships and having met with Bicton College to discuss their work, I am very confident in the quality as well as the vital importance of their offering."

The apprenticeship scheme allows young people to develop essential skills needed to pursue a career in business whilst earning a living and gaining a certified qualification.
