Some job seekers are not applying for apprenticeships because they think they are only for very young people, according to Paul Jefferson, Business Support Director at Devon based Gregory Distribution Limited.

To prove them wrong, the North Tawton based warehousing and distribution business has revealed its latest apprentice driver programme which has had an intake of six with an average age of 32 years.

Paul Jefferson said: “The road transport industry as a whole is facing a shortage of drivers and it is vital that we address this by attracting more people to take driving jobs. Offering apprenticeships allows us to attract suitable candidates who want to upskill or take on a new career direction”.

“LGV driver training today has a high degree of responsibility and challenge and will require an in-depth knowledge of transport and health & safety regulations, hazard awareness and risk assessment, vehicle maintenance, loading and unloading procedures and the ability to maximize the performance of the vehicle using the latest in-cab technology.

“Our new apprentice drivers have completed the first 12 weeks of their apprenticeships and are already qualified as LGV drivers and are now out on the road driving. Over the coming months they will receive further training to attain competencies to ensure they successfully complete their apprenticeships.  I am pleased to say that each of them from the June intake has surpassed the performance targets they have been set”.

The six apprentice drivers received a certificate of merit and a truck drivers atlas at a presentation held at the company’s Cullompton Depot.  They included Adrian House (Aged 42, Shepton Mallet), Rikki Millett (27, Willand), Stuart Govier, (42, North Tawton Milk), Ben Ryan (32, North Tawton Milk), Luke McDonald (28, Cullompton Milk) and Stephen Marsden (Lee Mill).

Paul Jefferson added: “Our message to anyone of any age considering a rewarding career in driving, is clear - get in touch with us.”

In addition to driving, Gregory Distribution is offering apprenticeships in heavy vehicle mechanics, warehouse and business & administration.
