Two pupils from Cranbrook Education Campus joined around 60 other Year 7 and 8 students from across the country at a five-day residential course provided by E.ON and designed to inspire tomorrow’s bright sparks to consider a career in a field of STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

All the pupils at the educational event attend schools which have previously taken part in an E.ON Creative Conductors workshop, which is designed to help pupils’ understanding of electricity, conduction and circuits. A group of Year 7 pupils at Cranbrook Education Campus participated in the Creative Conductors workshop during the summer term and two pupils, Oskar Stenka and Finlay Snape, were then invited to the residential camp in the summer holidays.
The five-day course was based in Loughborough, with visits out to E.ON’s Blackburn Meadows biomass-fired power station in Sheffield and to Hockerton Housing Project, a sustainable living community in Nottinghamshire.

Attendees also took part in hands-on workshops and interactive demonstrations, as they worked in teams to complete challenges around wind turbines, electric cars, robots and an energy efficient design project.

Louise Telford, Deputy Head of Secondary School at Cranbrook Education Campus, said: “E.ON’s Creative Conductors workshop went down very well at the school in the summer term, and this was a real opportunity for Oskar and Finlay to build on that learning over the summer holidays in a completely different environment.

“The programme of activities was hugely varied and gave them exposure to equipment and activities that just aren’t available in school, and got them thinking about the STEM subjects in non-traditional ways.”

Billie-Jean Poole, who works in E.ON’s Community Relations team, said: “We’ve reached 2,150 pupils through our touring Creative Conductors workshop since January, and the feedback has been very positive.

“We wanted to offer some of these pupils something different to the workshop experience, in a setting in which they could really explore themes of energy. We can’t take a power station into a school, but we were able to take this particular group of pupils into our Blackburn Meadows plant and let them see for themselves the process of energy generation.”
