A few road closures remain in place this afternoon as emergency services deal with the aftermath of a serious fire in Exeter city centre.

Fifteen appliances from across Devon, including one from Somerset, were called to the Richer Sounds in Sidwell Street at around 1.45pm yesterday, after smoke was reported to be billowing from the store.

Scaffolding will be erected to secure the building.

A spokesperson for Devon & Cornwall Police said: “Due to structural concerns following the fire at Richer Sounds on Sidwell Street, the building is going to be secured and scaffolding will be erected shortly.

“We believe this should be completed by around 10pm tonight.

“A few small closures remain in place, namely at Sidwell Street and half of St Anne’s Roundabout.”

Police say there should be no issues for those wishing to attended the match between Exeter City and Cardiff City at St James’ Park tonight, but  are asking that spectators consider using alternative access routes such as St James’ Road.

Fans will still be able to access via Sidwell Street but will have to take a slightly longer route due to the partial closure along St Anne’s Roundabout.

Police have expressed their thanks to the public for the patience shown during this incident.
