Exeter scientist awarded prestigious prize

Dr Jemma Wood from Exeter has been awarded a prize by the IBMS.

The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) awarded its Company Members prize in Diploma of Expert Practice (DEP) to Jemma at their AGM.
In the UK alone, pathologists are involved in over 70% of diagnoses in the NHS. Biomedical scientists like Jemma diagnose disease and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments through the analysis of fluids and tissue samples, handling over 150 million samples every year. When individuals like Jemma achieve excellence in the field, they are formally recognised by the Institute.

Held in Aberdeen on 3rd June, Jemma and eight other IBMS members were honoured with Company Members Prizes. The prize is a £250 cheque and a certificate, which is awarded annually to the candidate who at the first attempt, receives the highest pass mark in each discipline of the Higher Specialist Diploma examination. Jemma attained the highest mark across all Diploma of Expert Practice qualifications in Histological Dissection.

Jemma joined the IBMS in 2014 and became a Fellow in 2017. She is Clinical Scientist and Dissection Practitioner and works in the Histopathology department at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

IBMS President Ian Sturdgess said, “It gives me great pleasure to present Jemma with the Company Members Prize in Diploma of Expert Practice.”
