The sun shone brightly the 15th Marnie Burgoyne Memorial Golf Day earlier this month when 50 teams, many from local businesses, took to the fairways at Exeter Golf & Country Club and helped to raise a fantastic £16,717 for local charity Hospiscare.

The day is organised by a committee of volunteers and is held each year in memory of Marnie Burgoyne, who was part of the founding team that helped raise the money to build the hospice building, Searle House, which opened in 1992.

This year’s winning team were STR Logistics, who picked up the trophy for the first time in the 15 years they have taken part. Organiser Norma Foster said “I was delighted to see them win after all the years they have supported the event. It’s been yet another fabulous day with the business community coming together to raise funds for such an important local charity.”

The event was sponsored by local estate agents Burgoynes and owner John Burgoyne said “We are delighted to support this fantastic event once again, it has become part of the social calendar in the Exeter business community. There is always a great atmosphere on the day, with some healthy competition between teams and plenty of good humour. Hospiscare has such a close place in my heart and it is touching to see that it is the same for many others in our local community too."

New for this year was a ‘Beat the Pro’ competition on the 4th hole, organised by Director of Golf Darren Everett, who said “Exeter Golf & Country Club always looks forward to hosting this annual event and it was nice to bring the professionals in to add to the competition on the day. 150 golfers took up the challenge and raised an extra £645, which is fantastic.”

Louise Beeken, Head of Fundraising at Hospiscare, was pleased to announce that more than £200,000 has been raised for the charity since the initial golf day in 2005 and this milestone was celebrated at the end of the evening. “Every day our nurses are caring for people whose lives have been changed forever by a terminal diagnosis. We enable families to make the most of the time they have together, because everyday matters. The money raised by the amazing committee and local businesses has helped us provide care to the local community, together we are able to make a positive difference to local families during what is often a difficult time.”

Next year’s event will be held on Thursday 2nd July 2020.

Hospiscare is a local adult hospice charity, providing high quality care and support to people with any type of terminal illness, and those close to them, in Exeter, Mid and East Devon. A gift to Hospiscare in your Will helps to ensure the future of the charity in Devon for generations to come.
