Wickhams Shortlisted at Esteemed International Wine Challenge Merchant Awards UK 2022
A Devon-based online business, which was only set up 18 months ago to sell quality wines, has been shortlisted for two awards in a prestigious international competition. Wickhams, which is based in Newton Abbot, has been shortlisted for the International Wine Challenge (IWC) Merchant Awards UK 2022, in the 'Online Retailer of the Year' and 'Specialist Merchant of the Year England' categories. The awards celebrate the most successful small and large businesses, delivering outstanding service to wine consumers across the UK.
Wickhams founder, Dan Farrell-Wright, comments: “We are delighted to know that, as a young business, we are pressing all the right buttons. I set up Wickhams late in 2020 specifically to sell the kind of wines I like to drink myself, and we came out of the starting blocks so fast that within the first year of operations we already were being shortlisted for categories at the all-important annual Decanter Retailer Awards.”

Wickhams now offers more than 250 wines and spirits, including individual bottles as well as curated cases, encouraging customers to try new varieties, all at accessible price points. By building close working relationships with winemakers they are able to reduce the length of the supply chain to give better quality at a lower price whilst also using 100 % recyclable packaging.
Dan adds: “We’re passionate about knowing the story behind the wines we sell, more than 25 per cent of the wines listed on our website are from England, the majority of which are from Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. As a South West-based business, it’s a huge seal of approval that we’ve been included in the England specialist wine-merchant shortlist. We’ve taken time to get to know the wine producers we work with personally, it’s therefore great recognition not only for us, but for the producers including Sharpham Wine, Huxbear, Lyme Bay Winery and Calancombe Estate that we work with too.”
