Last chance to apply for grant to help reduce crime

Community groups in Devon and Cornwall have got just over a week to apply for a share in a £200,000 cashpot. Applications for the first round of the small grants scheme, which aims to help small community groups which work to reduce crime and make people feel safer, must be submitted by 31 October. Already over 60 applications have been received for grants up to £5,000 for projects. In my Police and Crime Plan I promised to find new ways to help organisations to help themselves and I am encouraged by the early response from groups looking for grass-roots funding, I urge anyone who is...

"Not everyone's on Twitter"

The past week was Local Democracy Week and Exeter City Council organised several events, including a Question Time from Exeter College.

During the event, I live-tweeted questions and answers. To what end?

Well, local councillor, Catherine Dawson hasdbeen signed off sick and was unable to attend Full Council on Tuesday and the other events during the week - she felt isolated from what was going on. At least she had Twitter.

She followed the Question Timeevent on Twitter as Ilinked my tweets from Exeter College with the hashtag #ExeQT.

She made the following...

Crime figures – good news or bad?

This week we saw the publication of the three-monthly crime figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS). As police and crime commissioner it is inevitable that the media will want me to comment in simple sound bites - is this good news or bad news news - so I thought I would clarify why I have been guarded in some of the interviews I have carried out this week. ONS figures are, and always have been, released three or four months in arrears - in this case to the end of June 2013, whereas, day to day, myself and the chief constable are dealing with up to the minute statistics about...

A Cleaner environment in Devon for all

Authored by mrpositive

We are looking for public support to build a fossil-free environment in Devon.

Where the air is clean and there is no pollution.

A green clean environment with clean energy that is free, mobile phones that never need to be plugged in ever again, Windows that create free energy for life. Houses built that are totally self sufficient from the national grid.

Vehicles that are a true hybrid that will run on solar and methane gas creating zero emissions into the air we breath.

A world where you can use your own bio-degradable waste and whereby creating free...

October Green Action Comment

In the last week it has become official – 97% of scientific research papers on climate indicate that the earth is heating up and that this is due primarily to human activity. The catastrophic consequences of the release of gases into the atmosphere whose particles trap heat is now abundantly clear. This is as close to scientific proof that we get, and is on a par to evidence that smoking causes lung cancer and other diseases.

We might be sceptical, as all good science is because it needs to continually review what is happening, but to deny that global warming is caused by people is...

Exeter Lives: Matthew Whittaker

No stranger to coffee lovers in Exeter and beyond, Matthew (Matt) Whittaker trades on his vintage Dutch trike, the BikeCaffe, most days except Sundays. He is also known to have peddled his coffee at various festivals throughout the land. We caught up with him to find out a little more about why he loves the city of Exeter.

Regain control of your life at every level

No one ever accused Larry Winget of mincing words. Larry, who is often referred to as the Pitbull of Personal Development, wouldn’t take very kindly to it anyway. His books, speeches and television appearances leave no doubt about where he stands and why he feels the way he does. Screen shot 2013-09-19 at 10.21.42 AM I admire Larry’s courage to speak plainly and without concern for “political correctness,” particularly when writing about a topic that involves convictions and self-confidence. His latest book is bound to pop a few eyeballs, probably starting with the title: “Grow A Pair: How...

Response to Adrian Fullam’s ‘Free food for kids’ article

Authored by karlknill

In his recent article, about free school meals, Adrian Fullam was rather misguided in much of what he said. The notion that only the Liberal Democrats could have produced such a policy is ludicrous. Firstly, many within the Labour Party have argued for just such a policy at a national level, whilst many Labour councillors have gone further and achieved such a policy at local level.

Secondly, what makes Adrian’s article and rhetoric so laughable is that where a Labour Council, Southwark, introduced free school meals, as a universal entitlement, they were criticised by Simon Hughes...
