Exeter Lives: Mariam Badavi

Fresh from winning the Venus Award for Employer of the Year 2013, Mariam Badavi, owner of Purity Spa on the quaint cobbled streets of Exeter's Cathedral Green, answers a question or two about living and working in this wonderful city.

What brought you to Exeter?
I was lucky enough to be brought up in Exeter and continue living here because its a great place to live! Although its a city, it doesn't feel too busy and has such a rich and deep history which I love!

Which part of Exeter or the surrounding area is home?
St. Leonard's

What is your favourite place in Exeter?
The Devon and Exeter Institution. As you walk into this amazing building which is conveniently right next door to my work, you can practically smell the old age of its vast collection of books and local newspapers, some dating from the eighteenth century! They even serve home-cooked food within a little dining room!

What is your favourite Exeter event?
The Food festival - I love how local businesses show off their products, amazing food and drink, I love the evening time live music, food, great cider and beer!

Great atmosphere.

What was the last live performance you saw in Exeter and where did you see it?
Northcott theatre The Gruffalo with my children, I love to watch their little faces and to see them laugh! Really I'm a big kid myself ;-)

Favourite place to eat out in or near Exeter?
Michael Caines' Restaurant at Abode Exeter. It's a magnificent restaurant overlooking a gothic cathedral. I love their amazing homemade breads that they bring out in a basket and their menu is truly special and always delicious!

Best coffee in town?
The Selleys' household! My friends' coffee is always very strong! You forget how tired you were the second you take a sip!

Favourite pub?
The Red Wing in Lympstone! They have an extensive wine list and menu in case you get hungry.

Favourite locally produced food or drink?
Darts Farm has everything I need and more!

Favourite shop?
I love John Lewis - you find everything under one roof!

Favourite shopping area?
Gandy street! Its a wonderful little cobbled street with independent shops, clothes for all ages, home furnishings and restaurants. It's especially perfect for finding unique clothing or handmade items you won't find anywhere else.
It makes me happy to know I am supporting local independent businesses whenever I shop there.

Beach or moors?
Moors. There is nothing better than to escape into the stunning moors where you achieve  peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

What or where is Exeter's best kept secret?
Purity Boutique Spa! Located in the Tudor-style building, it is over 500 years old and while taking in the breath taking views of the medieval masterpiece known as Exeter Cathedral, guests can indulge in delicious treatments to their heart's content!

What one change would you like to see in Exeter?
Less traffic! ;-) “I'd like to see more people taking care of themselves. I find that I meet so many people who are too busy taking care of others, that they forget to treat themselves, too!”)

Who is your local hero or heroine?
My true inspiration is my mum ;-)

Do you belong to any local clubs or societies
David Lloyd gym. Not that I ever have time to go!

What are you up to next?
We are in the process of educating all age groups about the importance of using sun creams to protect against skin cancer. This includes taking trips to schools and day care programs so that parents may educate their children and get them practicing good skincare habits through hands-on demonstrations.
