Poltimore House to Undergo a Significant Change
One of the most iconic historic buildings in Devon isn’t being restored. It’s being reimagined after a devastating fire wreaked havoc on the mansion.
The Importance of British Mansions
Historic mansions like this are irreplaceable. Britain’s mansions aren’t like other buildings, as they show social character and architecture that simply can’t be recreated. Stately homes and mansions are also incredibly popular with the general public.
Television shows like Britain’s Most Expensive Homes attract people who are fascinated by properties like this, whereas Secrets of Britain’s Historic Houses and Gardens celebrates the stories and heritage behind the finest estates. The allure goes beyond television too. Those who try Huff N Even More Puff Grand slot game will notice that a luxurious home is part of the backdrop, with construction tools and hats used to showcase its restoration.
YouTube content creators have embraced mansions too. Jared Dines launched The Musicians Mansion, which brings musicians and content creators together under one roof to collaborate and record music. The series showed how large homes can be used for creative workspaces rather than just being somewhere for someone to live.
As historic properties remain some of the biggest attractions in the UK, and as there are so many National Trust properties present, it makes perfect sense to try and bring Poltimore House back to life.
Modern Mansions are Finding New Purposes
The Grade II listed property, which is just north of Exeter, was undergoing a renovation at the time of the fire. This happened roughly two years ago. You can find out more about the fire on the Fire Risk Heritage website.
The fire destroyed essential parts of the house. Even though there have been discussions lately about returning the mansion to its former glory, reconstruction costs now stand at £20 million. Instead, trusts are trying to find ways to preserve what is left of the site.
Some of the ideas that are being floated right now include transforming the structure into a large garden, transforming it into an educational facility, or a performance arts space. The idea of converting it into a museum has also been mentioned, but before any work can be carried out, £500,000 will have to be spent clearing out the debris to try and make the site safe. The future of Poltimore House will look very different to what it did a couple of years ago, but with that said, the work hopes to breathe new life into the building.
Poltimore House once served as a grand country residence, but before that, it was a school and a maternity hospital for the NHS. It's a huge part of Devon’s heritage, and buildings like this are impossible to replace.
Finding a new and sustainable purpose for historic estates like Poltimore House has become important across the UK, whether it’s for cultural activities, tourism or even education; adapting heritage sites gives them the best chance of being protected for years to come, and it also helps to ensure that future generations can still be a part of their journey.
The discussions as to what is going to happen to Poltimore House are ongoing, but as a restoration has been officially ruled out, its time as a historic residence has come to an end.
