A watch isn’t just a strap-on device for keeping track of time. For men, it’s a fashion accessory just as much as a woman’s handbag. A suit, after all, just isn’t complete without a matching wristwatch. With this in mind, though, you don’t want to strap on any old Rolex and assume it’s fashionable just because it’s all bling-bling. Here are the trends that men should consider before updating their collection of expensive watches.

1. Bigger Is Not Better

There are some watches where the case nearly encompasses the entire wrist. Giant-size watches may have been considered hip at one point but not in 2017. Just as oversized belt buckles are over the top, so are oversized watches.

In 2017, expect smaller and slimmer watches to become a trend. In fact, watches aren’t only getting smaller but they’re also beginning to incorporate a more minimalist design. This means a case with no more than one or two knobs and a simple interior design. As a rule of thumb, the watch should be slim enough to fit under the cuff of your dress shirt.

2. White Gold Watches

White gold surged in popularity in 2015. It carried over to 2016 and is expected to remain hot in 2017. While rose gold is considered a fashion trend for women’s watches, white gold is just as stylish for men’s. A white gold watch should encompass most of the components, including the strap and buckles.
One major benefit of white gold is that – much like stainless steel - it’s easy to polish. This helps the surface retains its longevity.

There are also high predictions for the worth of gold in 2017, according to some analysts. This makes a gold watch a nice collector’s item and investment. It can also be quite a nice corporate gift for that all-important investor or high-profile clientele.

3. Customization

Some watchmakers now offer customization services. By customization, this goes beyond a simple engraving of one’s name or initials. Instead of opting for a stock model, buyers can mix and match their own parts, including their choice of strap, case, buckle, dials, and so on. Some parts, such as the strap, may even be interchangeable, allowing the wearer to switch to a style that best matches the occasion or attire.

4. Digital Connections

The Internet-of-Things is expected to really explode in 2017. We are already seeing more everyday items – from refrigerators to garage doors – being connected to the Internet with functions that can be controlled via smartphone. Of course, there is also the craze of the smartwatch. In 2017, expect luxury smartwatches to become a new trend and compete with the Apple Smartwatch. This will very likely open up an entirely new market segment.

5. All-Black Watches

Every component of a watch, from the strap to the dials, come in various color spectrums. Blue was a popular color trend for watches in 2016. This may roll over to 2017. However, black is also quickly becoming fashionable. An all-black watch where the strap and dial comes in a uniform color of night is expected to take off. This color blends nicely with a black suit and also provides a nice contrast if donning more neutral-colored attire.
Watches are every bit as fashionable as they are functional.

A watch reveals much detail about the wearer’s taste for all things stylish and elegant. Like clothing and other accessories, watch trends always change to correspond with the latest fad.
