Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

ELF is building a critical care suite at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, and its partners, Pavey Group have submitted the project to the Aviva Community Fund Awards programme to win £25,000 for the project.

The critical care suite will allow patients and their families privacy and dignity in a home away from home while undergoing treatment or facing the end of life. Once shortlisted it will be up to a panel of judges to decide if the project will be funded, but we need your votes to get us through to the shortlist.

The Devon Tourism Partnership, which promotes Devon under the 'Visit Devon' brand, is currently determining the future direction of the county’s promotion, domestically and internationally, and looking for businesses to tell them where they’d like their efforts concentrated.

The Devon Tourism Partnership is funded by the various tourism partnerships around the county and has a small budget of £35,000 pa, following funding cuts over the last few years. The Tourism Partnership receives no additional income of its own.

Exeter deaf students lead awareness event

Exeter Deaf Academy students will be out in force in Exeter City Centre tomorrow (Thursday 7 May) as part of National Deaf Awareness Week (4–10 May).

Toby Buckland’s Garden Festival at Powderham Castle on 1st and 2nd May was a "whizzing success" in it’s second year.

The two days opened with explosive "daytime fireworks", whooshing coloured smoke, and showering sparks in the clouds for opening ceremony with Toby and the Countess of Devon cutting the ribbon on Friday and (Lady Courtenay on Saturday) to start the day with live music, the festival Tuk Tuk and lots of local school children all ready to get gardening in the dedicated children’s marquee.

Dartmoor Zoo awarded Santander Foundation grant

Dartmoor Zoo has been successful in its application for the Santander Foundation Charity Plus Grant.

Director Benjamin Mee visited the Plymouth Branch of Santander to collect a cheque for £4750.

Benjamin, appearing in the photo with Dawn Young, Helen Retallick & Sara Williams said: "This is a very important donation from the Santander Foundation.

Businessmen raise £23k for Nepal

Two well-known businessmen who are on a 170-mile yomp from Devon to London have already raised more than £23,000 for the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund.

Exeter Chiefs star Henry Slade has been nominated for the Rugby Players' Association (RPA) LV= Young Player of the Year Award 2015 as voted for by Aviva Premiership players based on performances in domestic rugby this season.
