Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

Increase of over £2k for those in debt

Local charity Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau today publishes its annual advice trend statistics for the year-ending 31st March 2015. The charity helped 6170 people directly with advice and information on 15081 individual problems.

On average, clients with money problems have debts totaling £14,746.65, up by £2,046.48 compared to the previous year when the average was £12,700.17.

The amount of advice that the charity has been able to provide has increased in the following areas compared to last year:

Exeter bee project launches Queen Bee rearing programme

Princesshay’s City Bee project has launched a brand new Queen Bee rearing programme as part of the centre’s continued development of its rooftop environmental scheme.

Devon County Council has announced its new Chairman for the coming year.

Outgoing Chairman, Councillor George Gribble, handed over to the Council's new Chairman, Councillor Christine Channon, at a meeting of the Full Council this afternoon (Thursday 14 May).

Councillor Channon has represented Budleigh Salterton as local member for 22 years, and has served on many of the County Council's Committees.

Christine was Leader of the Conservative Group on the County Council for nine years, and Leader of the Council between 2002-03 and 2004-05 under a 'Rainbow'...

Unemployment in Devon continues to fall

The number of Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) claimants in Devon decreased even faster than nationally between March and April 2015, falling by 323 claimants (7.5% lower than March’s figure).

Total claimants for April came to 3,974, representing just 0.9% of the working age population of Devon.

JSA for Devon has fallen by 33% between April 2014 and April 2015, and a huge 57% since April 2011, when claimants stood at 9,451.

All of Devon’s eight districts experienced a decreased number of claimants between March and April 2015; North Devon falling the most by 12.6%....

Mercure Exeter Southgate celebrates £2m investment

The Mercure Exeter Southgate hotel today celebrated the completion of a £2 million investment project, transforming the interior of the city centre hotel.

The final phase of the extensive refurbishment completes the redesign of the reception, Gate House restaurant, bar, lounge, terrace and all 156 bedrooms.

The redesign has been inspired by the famous Exeter Book, an incredibly precious Anglo-Saxon tome housed at Exeter Cathedral. Written in 970 AD, the manuscript contains the world’s oldest and largest collection of Old English poetry.
