Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2015 has placed the University of Exeter sixth in the UK, eighth in Europe and top 40 in the world. The University also rose 24 places since 2014 in the overall rankings.

Chiefs trio in England training squad

England today announced their extended training squad for the Rugby World Cup 2015.

The 50-man group, which includes Exeter Chiefs trio Luke Cowan-Dickie (above), Jack Nowell and Henry Slade, will meet up at Pennyhill Park on Monday, June 22 to begin preparing for the tournament which starts against Fiji at Twickenham Stadium on Friday, September 18.

England will also face France home and away and Ireland at Twickenham as part of the QBE Internationals as they build towards RWC 2015.

The Maynard School choir is one of 20 schools in England and Wales to have been selected to be part of the ceremonies that will officially welcome the teams to Rugby World Cup 2015.

The ceremonies will also include the formal presentation of official Tournament caps and Rugby World Cup 2015 participation medals.

House prices rise

UK house prices increased by 9.6% in the year to March 2015, up from 7.4% in the year to February 2015, according to the Office For National Statistics.

House price annual inflation was 9.4% in England, 5.7% in Wales, 14.6% in Scotland and 7.5% in Northern Ireland. This is the highest annual increase in Scotland since July 2007.

The pace of annual house price growth increased across the majority of the UK.

Annual house price increases in England were driven by an annual increase in the East (11.4%), London (11.2%) and the South East (11.2%).

The search is on for the funniest and most creative business name in Exeter with the launch of the Small Business Pun of the Year 2015.

The awards, launched by build-your-own-app service Appsme.com, aims to find the shop or small business with the most side-splitting name. It was with a heavy heart that Dean Mumm trudged down the players’ tunnel at Sandy Park for the final time on Saturday afternoon.
