Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

Exeter scientists secure prestigious award

Two world-leading scientists from the University of Exeter have been honoured with a prestigious national science award.

Crowdcube set to innovate in the IPO market with £6m investment

Crowdcube, the pioneering investment crowdfunding platform, today announced that it has raised £6m of investment to further accelerate its growth. The investment is led by Numis, a leading UK stockbroker and corporate advisor.

Women shoppers targeted in supermarket distraction thefts

Police are warning women shoppers to be vigilant after a series of distraction thefts in supermarket car parks in Devon and Cornwall.

Officers are investigating at least five reports this week where lone females have been targeted in Plymouth, Newton Abbot and Saltash while loading shopping into their cars.

In each case the woman has been approached by a man asking for directions, usually to the local Post Office. Some have been asked to draw a map on a notepad supplied by the offender.

Ancient floor uncovered at Exeter Cathedral

An ancient tiled floor described as the "finest medieval tile pavement surviving in Devon and Cornwall" has been revealed for the first time in decades.

The floor has been uncovered as part of planned renovation work to the Cathedral. It is in a room above a Chapel, which in the Middle Ages was used as the Exchequer and in the 20th century as the Song School for boy choristers.

The decorative tiled floor has intricate patterns and was laid in the late 13th century.

The nearest similar medieval floor is in Winchester Cathedral.

Investment secured for supply teacher start up

An innovative start up company that has developed an app to help schools find supply teachers has secured £100,000 of investor funding, with South West law firm Stephens Scown advising on the deal.

Supply Clouds Development, which has already been valued at £1 million, was looking for investment to help it grow further and market its cloud-based solution which links schools, job agencies and supply teachers with an effective communication tool.

'Board' has unveiled a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a new permanent location in Exeter.

The independent Board Game Café, run by siblings Luke and Beth Mildenhall-Ward, opened as a pop-up shop earlier this year in South Street.

After a successful four month run, the café is now looking to set down roots in the city at a new, larger location.

During its pop-up period, 'Board' worked exactly like a normal café but with a twist – there were shelves upon shelves of board games for customers to play.

Devon looks set for bumper tourist season

Visitors to Devon’s official tourist information site, Visit Devon, are on the up and predictions expect record breaking visits to the county this summer from both UK tourists and those from overseas.

Visits to www.visitdevon.co.uk for the past month of July are up 45% on last year’s website hits, and for the first week of the summer holidays (week commencing 20th July) website views were up 60%.
