Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

This will set out a clear ambition to become a leading city of culture. The new Exeter Culture Strategy is ambitious and will be delivered in partnership with the city’s cultural organisations...

Murder enquiry launched in Newton Abbot

Detectives have launched a murder enquiry following the suspicious death of a 51-year-old man in Newton Abbot.

Adrian Munday [pictured] was found deceased at a property, at 8 Wain Lane around 11am on Tuesday 6 October.

The investigation found that there had been a fire at the address which was extinguished before police arrived.

The death was being treated as unexplained, but a further forensic examination has now determined that Mr Munday had sustained serious injuries which were not related to the fire.

Exeter projects part of £21m Engineering Grand Challenges research announcement

Three new research programmes, led by or featuring the University of Exeter, that aim to tackle some of the major challenges facing science and engineering have been announced.

Science Minister Jo Johnson today (October 16) gave the green light to seven new research programmes across the UK, during a visit to the University of Cambridge.

Devon's winter preparations underway

More than 4,000 grit bins across Devon are currently being inspected and re-filled by Devon County Council in preparation for winter.

Although the Autumn sunshine has dominated the recent weather, the County Council is gearing up for the coming season as it has now started its winter service operations.

Exeter Library celebrates 50 years

Exeter library is celebrating its 50th birthday on October 22, and the public is being called on to join the festivities.

The library, then called the ‘New City Library’, was unveiled by the Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, on Friday 22 October 1965.

The opening followed the previous library, in Castle Street, being bombed in 1942.

Since then hundreds of thousands of people have passed through its doors and used its services.

With new ward boundaries now in place in Exeter, people are being asked for their thoughts on proposed new polling districts and stations within those wards.

The Local Boundary Commission for England recently published its recommendations on electoral arrangements for Exeter.
