Baxter happy with Chiefs' new hard edge

Rob Baxter believes missing out on last season’s end of season play-offs in the Aviva Premiership has given his Exeter Chiefs side a steely determination to go one better this term.

After three rounds of the new campaign, the Devon club sit third in the standings after they swept aside winless Newcastle Falcons 41-3 at Kingston Park.

Undone in the corresponding fixture last season by the North East outfit, Baxter watched on with glowing satisfaction as his Chiefs team ran in six tries during a polished display.

Five of those scores came in the first half as Will...

Coast Along – the golden thread that links tourism gems

The South West Coast Path is fast becoming known as a vital link between South West tourism businesses.

Every year, it attracts nearly 9 million outside visitors who come to walk this world class route, each of whom contributes to a total spend of £436m.

This is a staggering statistic that doesn’t include the everyday walkers such as dog owners and local residents, who frequent the various places to eat, sleep and drink on a more regular basis. Alistair Handyside, Chairman of the South West Tourism Alliance says the Coast Path is “regularly described as the region’s best...

Directors, shareholders and others connected with an insolvent company can now have their acquisition of its business through a ‘pre-pack’ sale reviewed by an independent ‘pool’ of experts – in a move to improve transparency in UK business rescue. Pre-packs, which involve the sale of a struggling business being negotiated before it is put into administration and being completed by the administrators shortly after their appointment, are the subject of a package of reforms being launched today. The reforms follow the recommendations of an independent review into pre-packs for the government...

2,100 children will wake up homeless at Christmas

Shelter analysis of government statistics reveals that over 2,100 children will wake up homeless this Christmas day in the South West. And worryingly, with councils feeling the pressure of our affordable housing shortage, the number of families across Britain living in B&Bs – accommodation which is often cramped and unsafe for children – has more than trebled over the last five years. Shelter is calling on the public for urgent support this Christmas, as its advisers struggle to cope with demand for help from the growing number of families battling to keep a roof over their heads. To...

Chiefs ground the Falcons

On Halloween weekend, Exeter Chiefs ensured there was no repeat of last season’s Kingston Park ‘Horror Show’ as they powered to man emphatic victory in the Aviva Premiership.

Undone 29-24 at the North East venue last term, Rob Baxter’s side moved back amongst the division’s frontrunners with a frightening six-try display against winless Newcastle Falcons ending 3-41.

Five tries in the opening half from Will Chudley, Julian Salvi, Matt Jess and Don Armand (2) did much of the damage for the visitors, who added a further score after the break through replacement Moray Low....
