Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

Exeter Christmas Market returns

This year's Exeter Christmas Market will run from Thursday 19 November until Saturday 19 December.

Council celebrates early success of Handy Person trial

Demand for free Handy Person service means trial area will now be extended to include all of East Devon.

The new Handy Person service, which in September 2015 began a six-month trial in Exmouth Town, Honiton and Axminster, has already proved such a success, that East Devon District Council has decided to roll out the trial across the entire district until the end of February 2016, which is when the trial concludes.

Samaritans seek volunteers with promise

The Exeter, Mid and East Devon branch of Samaritans is seeking more volunteers - with the promise that anyone who joins will make a difference and touch someone’s life.

Two open evenings are being held at the branch, in central Exeter, on November 24 and January 13 to explain what is involved and how people can help.

“To touch another person’s life, when it really matters to them, is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done” explains Caz from Exeter (pictured) who has volunteered with Samaritans for the past 18 months.

Michelmores has become the latest corporate member to join the Exeter Dementia Action Alliance − which works to reduce stigma and misconceptions surrounding dementia, by raising local awareness and offering regular dementia information sessions.

Exeter scoops award for solar car ports

An initiative to install the UK's first solar panel car ports in two Exeter car parks has won an environmental award for Exeter City Council.

The City Council scooped The Most Sustainable Public Sector Project - Innovation Award at the Public Sector Sustainability Awards in London.

Following the tragic events in Paris, Devon & Cornwall Police is asking the public to be vigilant and to report anything suspicious to the police.

Although the threat level remains ‘severe’ there is currently no specific intelligence to suggest a threat to the UK or locally.

The public should not be alarmed at this time but it is important that we all remain alert with a sense of awareness and be vigilant to any suspicious persons, incidents or behaviour.

One in three of us drinking too much

A new study released today reveals that one in three adults in the South West are drinking too much alcohol, consuming it at levels that pose an increasing or higher risk of damaging their health.

But 83% of those drinking above the Government’s recommended guidelines underestimate their drinking, seeing themselves as ‘moderate’ or ‘light’ drinkers and 69% are not concerned about how much they drink.
