Rising tide of tourism on SW Coast Path

Figures released last week (18 December) about the South West Coast Path show that walkers using England’s longest National Trail spent around £468m during 2014, an increase of almost 23% in the past five years. It bucks the trend for tourism in the region as a whole, which increased by 12% overall but has remained fairly static in the past two years.

Devon organisations receive Community Impact Support Scheme funding

Grants have been awarded to five organisations in Devon so far in the first round of funding through a new business support scheme.

The Community Impact Support Scheme (CISS) was launched earlier this year to provide funding ranging from £10,000 to £50,000 to community organisations, social enterprise and voluntary sector groups.

The scheme is being run by Devon County Council in partnership with district councils, and a number of key stakeholders are providing support, including Dartington School for Social Entrepreneurs, Devon Community Foundation, Devon Communities...

The next stage in the development of East Devon District Council’s Sidmouth and East Beach Management Plan (BMP) project is underway, as an appraisal of a draft long list of options, designed to manage potential coastal flooding and erosion along Sidmouth seafront and East Beach, has been sent to the Steering Group (SG) for their consideration, prior to the next SG meeting on 15 January 2016.

The long list of options is based upon comprehensive and detailed studies into coastal processes, defence assessment, environmental issues and economics produced by the council’s consultants...

Devon’s JSA claimants fall in November

The number of people in Devon claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) in November fell by 85 compared to the previous month.

And 65 of those people were aged under 24.

At the end of November the total number of claimants stood at 3,693.

Overall the claimant rate for Devon – the percentage of Devon’s working age population claiming JSA – is 0.8%, far below the UK average of 1.6%.

At a district level, the greatest falls were found in Exeter and Mid Devon, each falling by 61 and 50 claimants respectively.

A leading local law firm has been named for the second year running amongst the top 100 companies to work for in the UK, according to the influential Sunday Times list.

Michelmores is proud to announce a fundraising total of £65,273 for its Charity of the Year, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Over its two year partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, Michelmores hosted a variety of events across its Exeter, Bristol and London offices.

The majority of funds raised came from the firm’s popular 5K run, that takes place in Exeter's City Centre and attracts around 1,000 runners each year.

Aussie ace to join Chiefs

Australian international Greg Holmes says he is relishing the challenge that lies ahead after he today sealed his move to Aviva Premiership side Exeter Chiefs.

The 32-year-old tight-head prop, who joins from Super Rugby outfit Queensland Reds, will move to Sandy Park at the start of next season on a two-year deal.
