Killerton gallops into New Year with old friends

The ranger team on the Killerton estate, near Exeter, are to welcome back ten Dartmoor ponies to resume conservation grazing on the Iron Age hill fort as part of a major parkland restoration project.

The Dartmoor ponies were a big hit with visitors last year, proving to be as good at posing for photos as they were at munching on invasive scrub, brambles and grass. An NHS community matron from Exeter has been awarded the title of Queen’s Nurse.

Rachel Armstrong was given the title by The Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) at an awards ceremony at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London.

The award by the national community nursing charity reflects a commitment to high standards of patient care, learning and leadership.

Rachel, who has been in nursing for 35 years, works as a community matron for the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust.

Lidl brings job boost for Exeter and East Devon Growth Point

Lidl is set to buy Sainsbury's land holding at Clyst Honiton near Exeter with the potential to create hundreds of jobs for local people.

The site, also known as the Exeter Gateway, already has planning permission for a distribution warehouse of 50,000 m². M5 closed after tanker overturns

A tanker has overturned on the northbound carriageway of the M5 resulting in closures in both directions.

Police were called just before 9am today (6 January) after a tanker, carrying kerosene, overturned just before the slip-road at junction 23 northbound.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “The top of the tanker has split and kerosene has spilt onto the carriageway.

“There are full closures in place at junction 23 southbound (Bridgwater) and junction 24 northbound (Huntworth/Bridgwater).

Give and Take Days enable people to pass on things they no longer need - and the chance to pick up something they do for free.

Over £2.1m spent by community transport users across Devon

More than £2.1 million was spent by community transport users in local high streets across Devon in 2015, according to new figures.

The estimated financial support to local businesses is highlighted in a survey carried out by the Community Transport Associations in Devon.

Nearly 3,000 Ring & Ride and Shopmobility service users were asked how much they had spent on their shopping trips in November. The anonymous responses of those who took part in the survey revealed that in total they had spent over £128,000 throughout the month.

The UK's largest racecourse group attracted record numbers of people to enjoy a day at the races during the last year, according to new figures published today by Jockey Club Racecourses which show in 2015 its total attendances surpassed 1.9 million for the first time ever.
