Storm Frank causes disruption across Devon

Devon County Council is urging people to take care and remain vigilant as bad weather continues in the South West.

High winds and heavy rainfall have caused localised flooding and disruption on many of Devon’s roads, and motorists are being advised to take extra care. People are being urged to avoid coastal and river areas as the severe weather continues to cause water levels to rise and waves to over top seafronts.

A key figure in establishing and building the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campuses has been awarded an MBE for services to the community.

Jean Taylor worked for the University for 21 years before she retired from her role as Head of Strategic Economic Development in Cornwall last summer. Storm Frank has been making itself felt in Devon today with heavy rain and winds reaching speeds of more than 50mph battering the county.

Forecasters say that the downfalls will last throughout the day with the strong gusts abating by 3pm

More than 3.5 million homes and businesses have now been reached by the Government’s nationwide rollout of superfast broadband, figures published yesterday (Sunday 27 December 2015) reveal.

Chiefs dealt another injury blow

Exeter Chiefs have been dealt another untimely injury blow with the news that lock Damian Welch is set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Head coach Rob Baxter has confirmed the 33-year-old lock is to be ruled out for several months after picking up a chest injury in the recent European Champions Cup game away to ASM Clermont Auvergne.

Welch, who is undergoing surgery today on the pectoral muscle injury, has been a key member of Baxter’s side since arriving from the Scarlets back in the summer of 2012.

The Met Office has issued two severe weather warnings as strong winds and heavy rain set to batter Devon

Stormy conditions are expected to hit the region tonight (TUESDAY), lasting well into tomorrow.

The Exeter-based agency's chief forecaster said: “A cold front will move east across western parts of the UK during Tuesday night and Wednesday, with an associated strong, moist southwesterly airflow. Rainfall accumulations through this period are expected to be widely 20-40mm, with 60mm or more over some higher ground.”

Exeter home severely damaged by fire

A house in the Beacon Heath area of Exeter was severely damaged by fire last night (Monday 28 December).

Fire crews were called to the property in Merlin Crescent at 6.36pm.

One crew from Danes Castle and one crew from Middlemoor attended.

A spokesperson for Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said: “On arrival the crews confirmed that the first floor bedroom was well alight.

“They got to work using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one safety jet and a positive pressure ventilation fan.”
