We can't dwell on loss says Rimmer

Carl Rimmer insists Exeter Chiefs can ill afford to dwell on their loss at Northampton Saints as Aviva Premiership rivals Gloucester now loom large on the horizon.

In their first outing of 2016, Rob Baxter’s side suffered only their second league defeat of the season as they went down 8-3 at Franklin’s Gardens.

On a disappointing afternoon for the visitors, the one small crumb of comfort they could take from their trip to the East Midlands was the crucial losing bonus point accrued thanks to Gareth Steenson’s late penalty.

Although defeated, the Chiefs maintained...

500,000 people in SW cutting back on winter essentials to pay rent or mortgage

The New Year may not be very happy for hundreds of thousands of people in the South West, as research by Shelter reveals a fifth of rent or mortgage payers in the region are cutting back on winter heating and clothing to meet their housing payments. This is the equivalent to 500,000 people.

The study by housing and homelessness charity Shelter and YouGov shows the strain people in the South West face this January, with one in eight rent or mortgage payers fearing they will be unable to meet their housing costs this month.

This is despite the fact that many have already cut...

Baxter looks for positives in defeat

Rob Baxter attempted to pick the positives out of a disappointing display from his Exeter Chiefs side as they slipped to only their second Aviva Premiership defeat of the season at Northampton Saints.

Mike Haywood’s first half try, together with a penalty from fly-half JJ Hanrahan, enabled the Saints to return to winning ways with a narrow 8-3 victory at Franklin’s Gardens. Gareth Steenson’s late penalty ensured the visitors at least grabbed a losing bonus point from their trek to the East Midlands, but that was one of only a few highlights for Baxter to reflect on at the final...

The new year has started in the best possible way for a ‘dying’ Exeter woman.

Jo Smith's health has improved dramatically since she flew to America for treatment.

The 37-year-old previously relied on a wheelchair but is now able to walk some distance unaided as this heart-warming picture shows. In another image she is seen playing outside with her five-year-old son Rudey.

Jo is believed to be the only known person in the world to suffer from a rare combination of two diseases – pulmonary hypertension and lymphatic cancer.

Less than a year ago, she was told...

Stay safe appeal during bad weather

Devon County Council is urging people to take care and remain vigilant as bad weather continues in the South West.

High winds and heavy rainfall have caused localised flooding and disruption on many of Devon’s roads, and motorists are being advised to take extra care.

People are also being urged to avoid coastal and river areas as the severe weather continues to cause water levels to rise and waves to over top seafronts.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highway Management and Flood Prevention, said:

“With strong winds and...

Warning over change in data protection rules

Leading South West law firm Stephens Scown LLP has warned businesses that they will need to ensure their data protection processes are robust enough to meet tough new rules which have just been agreed by the EU to unify data protection rules across the region.

Stephens Scown advises that almost all businesses will need to change how they deal with customer data in light of these new rules and that it is highly unlikely that any business will be compliant due to the scope of the changes.

The new General Data Protection Regulation is expected to be formally agreed early next...
