Exeter-based law firm achieves record breaking results

Porter Dodson, the South West-based UK Top 200 law firm, has announced a record-breaking year of growth and achievement, increasing revenue to £20.2m, while retaining the highly prestigious Gold Investors In People accreditation for the third successive time.

Across its Exeter, Sherborne, Poundbury, Bridport, Wellington, Taunton, and Yeovil offices, the firm has seen year-on-year growth of 15.5%, leading to a 25.4% leap in net profit.

Shaun Sawyer will remain as chief constable of Devon and Cornwall Police up to 2021. GAP Hire Solutions, the UK’s leading independent equipment hirer, has launched a new initiative which offers a selection of the company’s 100 most frequently hired products available quickly and delivered efficiently.

Sugar tax could prevent 3.7m cases of obesity over next decade

A 20 per cent tax on sugary drinks could reduce obesity rates in the UK by five per cent by 2025 - equal to 3.7 million fewer obese people - according to a new report from Cancer Research UK and the UK Health Forum published today (Friday).

The report predicts the impact a 20 per cent sugary drinks tax could have on obesity if current trends continue. This stark number (3.7 million) is equivalent to the combined populations of Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Bristol and Leicester.

People are being invited to have their say on plans for a new bus station in Exeter at an open forum next month.

Exeter City Council will be holding the event at the Corn Exchange in Market Street, Exeter on Thursday (3 March) between 8am and 5.30pm.

Work to start on new Mamhead Slipway in March

Work begins next month on a brand new slipway for Mamhead as East Devon District Council invests £1.2 million to restore the vital maritime access to Exmouth’s wonderful waterside.

When completed, the slipway will be a larger, safer and more resilient facility for people to use for decades to come. It will be able to take bigger craft with space to turn and manoeuvre off the highway. Devon's JSA claimants fall 12% in a year

The number of Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) claimants in Devon has fallen by 12 per cent in a year.

JSA claims in January 2016 increased slightly by 150 compared to the previous month, December 2015 with the total now standing at 3,752 claimants.

Despite this small rise, the figure is still 12% lower than the same period last year, and 65% lower than January 2012.

A small rise in January is typical of Devon’s seasonal employment associated with the festive season.
