Exeter-based employment lawyer joins Westbank Community Health and Care’s Board of Trustees

The Devon-wide health and wellbeing charity, Westbank Community Health and Care, is delighted to welcome lawyer Henry Cross as its newest Trustee. Henry is a Senior Associate at Michelmores, specialising in employment law.

A father-of-two from Exeter, Henry already had a broad awareness of the charity when he met Westbank’s Head of Carers Services, Andy Hood, at a networking event a few years ago. When he subsequently learnt that Westbank was looking for a law-oriented Trustee to join its Board, he was quick to express his interest in the role.

Fraudsters jailed after targeting Tiverton victim

Fraudsters who preyed on vulnerable people across the UK and Channel Islands, by stealing money from their bank accounts, have been jailed.

Six offenders, aged between 21 and 45, have been jailed for a total of more than 20 years at Bristol Crown Court for their crime, which involved duping more than £1.3m from vulnerable and elderly victims, including many living in the south west of England. A seventh person has been given a nine month custodial sentence (suspended for two years).

Polls open in historic referendum

Polling stations across Devon have opened in a historic referendum on whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union or leave.

The referendum ballot paper asks the following question: "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"

Whichever side gets more than half of all votes cast is considered to have won.

A YouGov poll for The Times gave Remain a lead of 51 to 49. FTI Consulting gave Remain the edge by 51.4 per cent to 48.6 per cent once 'don't knows' are taken out.

Staff at a local opticians in Exeter are donning their daftest fancy dress and striking their best poses, as part of Armed Forces week. To show support for this year’s Armed Forces Week (20-26 June), Specsavers Exeter will be hosting a day of fancy dress fun on Saturday 25 June to raise money for Blind Veterans UK (BVUK). University expert wins prestigious literary prize

A University of Exeter expert who brought to life the unusual romance between politician Benjamin Disraeli and his wife has won a prestigious literary prize for her work.

Dr Daisy Hay, Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Archival Studies in the Department of English, has won a 2016 Somerset Maugham Award for her book Mr & Mrs Disraeli – A Strange Romance.

New volunteer toolkit for Exeter

A new toolkit to help Exeter’s cultural organisations engage and manage their volunteers effectively will be launched at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) on Tuesday 5 July.

Exeter man killed in crash named

Police investigating a fatal road traffic collision near Ottery St Mary are trying to trace the deceased man's next of kin.

Following formal identification, the man has been named as Robert Christopher Trott, 53, from Exeter.

Extensive enquiries have been carried out to locate Robert’s next of kin but so far have been unsuccessful.

Officers believe Robert has a brother in the Exeter or Plymouth area and are appealing for him or any other family members to get in touch.

Youth Club celebrates Queen's Birthday Award

Devon village had links with Roman Empire

A team of archaeologists, students and local volunteers have unearthed evidence of a Romano-British settlement in a rural Devon village.

The finds shed new light on how the county’s inhabitants lived during the Roman period. Until now little evidence of the Romans had been found outside of Exeter and it had been thought that rural areas had not been particularly affected by Roman influence.

On Friday 24th June, Powderham Castle is inviting everyone to join in the National Cream Tea Day celebrations at the Castle.

Wholesome Devon cream teas will be served in abundance at the Courtenay Café, situated in the courtyard of Powderham Castle, with lashings of full-fat Langage Farm clotted cream and locally produced jam and tea.
