A new chapter for Exeter based Sparx Learning: Chair Simon Lebus CBE steps down as Sir Charlie Mayfield appointed

Sparx Learning , the Exeter-based education technology company, has announced that Sir Charlie Mayfield will become Chair in October 2025. He will succeed Simon Lebus CBE who is stepping down after six years of transformative leadership.

Since becoming Chair in 2019, Simon Lebus has overseen a period of remarkable growth and strategic progress at Sparx. At the start of his tenure, the company served just 14 schools in Devon. Today, Sparx’s platforms support over 2.4 million students in 2,600 schools, including almost 50 in Devon, across mathematics, literacy and science.

Mental health charity receives housebuilder's donation

A mental health charity in Exeter is set to reach out to more women thanks to a grand donation from a leading UK housebuilder. Mind in Exeter & East Devon has been handed a £1,000 donation from Persimmon Homes South West courtesy of the housebuilder’s Community Champions scheme, which sees a pot of £24,000 donated to local groups and charities. The funding will be directed to ‘The Women’s Network’, a service from the group that has a sole focus on women that have become isolated after experiencing a mental health difficulty. More listeners tuning into BBC Radio Devon

BBC Radio Devon is celebrating after attracting more listeners to the station.

Despite a blip following a major shake up of presenters the audience has significantly bounced back.

The station now has 200,000 listeners each week, according to the independent RAJAR survey. Mark Grinnell, Editor of BBC Radio Devon said: “BBC Radio Devon is in a strong position. We are the place listeners come for news, information and entertainment. But we’re so much more than that – our listeners are a family and the station is here for their views and comments.

Tom Bonfield, of Hillside Product Design of Teignmouth, has been shortlisted as a finalist for The National Plastics Industry Awards 2016 Young Designer of the Year award.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) Voucher Scheme is shaping up to be one of the most successful in the country, according to BDUK with residents and businesses across Devon and Somerset taking advantage of the scheme to boost broadband connectivity. Devon & Somerset Trading Standards Service is warning residents to be vigilant against scammers claiming to be from a council or other public authority.

The warning follows a series of complaints to the service from residents who have received scam calls.

Callers claiming to be from local authorities including Devon County Council and Somerset County Council have attempted to gain the confidence of their victims, their personal details or money.
