UK and Ireland law firm, Browne Jacobson is backing a national effort to mobilise millions of volunteers while strengthening its employee volunteering offer, as a Founder Member of GoVo , the digital volunteering platform developed by Royal Voluntary Service.

Cathedral drainage project announced

VITAL repairs to the drainage system around Exeter Cathedral begin next week as part of an ongoing project to prevent serious damage to the fabric of the building. Efficient drainage around the Cathedral is vital for taking rainwater away from the stonework and preventing damp and decay. Localised excavations between the North Tower and the West Front of the Cathedral will allow for pipes to be replaced, manholes renewed and other repairs to be carried out. Former restaurant boss Helen tastes success in new career

A brave decision by a former restaurant manager to change her career has paid off for a care worker who is now in line for a prestigious award.

Helen Kermode, originally from Exeter and now living in Swansea, moved to South Wales in 2009 but didn’t have a job to go to.

“I just felt I wanted something more fulfilling,” she said.

Now she has been shortlisted for one of this year’s Wales Care Awards, organised by Care Forum Wales to recognise outstanding practice in the care sector.

Benefit delays driving people into debt

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, has published its advice trend statistics for the first five-months of the financial year. The charity has helped 12% more people with their advice and information when compared to the same period in 2015.

The advice trends over the period were as follows:

Debt

Overall, the charity dealt with 14% more debt enquiries. The main increases being:

• 49.0% about bankruptcy and debt relief orders • 27.8% about water arrears • 25.7% about council tax arrears

One of the region’s top insurance brokers announced their next charity challenge at a special anniversary party last week.

Northcott Beaton, based in Exeter, celebrated their 25th anniversary at a 90s themed celebration held at the prestigious Woodbury Park Hotel.
