Devon launches new wave of funded training to power the region’s future

Devon County Council has officially launched the sixth year of its flagship Train4Tomorrow Skills Bootcamps programme, offering over 2,000 adults in the region a unique opportunity to upskill or retrain for in-demand jobs.

Backed by government funding as part of the national Skills for Life initiative, this latest wave of Train4Tomorrow will deliver high-quality, employer-designed training across key growth sectors; from construction trade skills, HGV driving, EV charger installation, AI and data skills and early years education.

Crealy Meadows at Crealy Adventure Park & Resort has won gold at the Devon Tourism Awards 2016 in the ‘Camping & Caravanning Park of the Year’ category. This year the awards saw over 600 entries from across Dorset, Somerset, Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Devon, Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly. Judi Spiers hosted the awards ceremony, which took place on Thursday 10th November at the University of Exeter’s Great Hall, with a guest appearance from Exeter-based Olympian Jo Pavey.

Prize draw prompts 1,800 pledges to 'love their clothes'

A Crediton curate has won Recycle Devon prize draw by pledging to reduce the amount of unwanted clothing she throws away.

The Reverend Helen Drever of Crediton Parish Church won a £45 laundry ‘bucket’ made from ‘upcycled’ sailcloth donated by Sails and Canvas in Topsham.

The draw was part of the Love Your Clothes campaign which aimed to change the way Devon consumers buy, use and dispose of their clothing.

The £10 vouchers winners are Sandy Parle from Seaton, Kathy Tagg from Exeter and Jane Rosewell from Clyst Honiton.

Devon nature reserve needs your vote

A new Devon nature reserve on a former spoil heap is in the running to receive funding in a national competition. But the funding from the Aviva Community Fund is awarded to projects that win the most public votes. So the charity Devon Wildlife Trust is encouraging people to vote to help the wildlife at its new Teigngrace Meadow nature reserve. The nature reserve, right next to the A38, between Newton Abbot and Bovey Tracey, offers spectacular views of nearby Dartmoor from its summit. Alcohol Awareness Week is kicked off in Devon on November 13 with an LGBT event at Exeter City Football Club.

Organised by Drink Wise, Age Well and LGBT 3, the ARM in ARM event, aimed at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, featured guest speakers including Sahar Mediha Al-Naas from Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council and Carol Steele from Transfigurations.

The Prince of Wales has praised the work of University of Exeter experts to help support small family farms.

His Royal Highness has said he hopes recommendations by Professor Michael Winter and Professor Matt Lobley and their team, to help ensure a smooth succession between different generations of farmers, are taken up.

Get in the Christmas spirit on FORCE Santa Cycle

There are still places available on this year’s FORCE Cancer Charity Santa Cycle on Saturday November 26.

One hundred cyclists in Santa suits will ride from Topsham to Exmouth on the Exe Estuary Trail and return via boat.

The cost is £15 for adults and £7.50 for children under 16 to include a wear-and-keep Santa suit.

The ride, sponsored by Bike Shed and Stuart Line Cruises, starts from Topsham Rugby Club at 12:30pm.

The cruise back up the estuary aboard the Pride of Exmouth leaves at 2pm with hot drinks and mince pies on board.

Old Mill raises £5,000 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance

Accountants and financial planners Old Mill have raised more than £5,000 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance by hosting an Autumn Dinner Dance.

More than 100 people supported the black tie event, which was held at Bowood House in Calne on Saturday 15th October.
