A pioneering new technique that encourages the wonder material graphene to “talk” could revolutionise the global audio and telecommunications industries.

Researchers from the University of Exeter have devised a ground-breaking method to use graphene to generate complex and controllable sound signals. In essence, it combines speaker, amplifier and graphic equaliser into a chip the size of a thumbnail.

Traditional speakers mechanically vibrate to produce sound, with a moving coil or membrane pushing the air around it back and forth. It is a bulky technology that has hardly...

Chiefs are crowned champions

Seven years ago this week Exeter Rugby Club achieved – at that time – their finest hour, defeating rivals Bristol to book their place amongst the great and the good of English Rugby.

Today, a new and amazing chapter was written into the history of the Chiefs as Rob Baxter’s side triumphed at Twickenham, lifting the Aviva Premiership crown for the first time in the club’s history.

Since that wet and wild night at the Memorial Stadium there have been many happy memories, but this has eclipsed them all.

Chiefs side to face Wasps

It was seven years today that Exeter Chiefs finally arrived at English rugby’s top table.

On a wet and wild night at the Memorial Stadium, the dream became reality for Rob Baxter and his side as they overcame rivals Bristol in the inaugural Championship Play-Off Final.

In the years that have followed, Devon’s finest have not only defied the many doubters who claimed their existence in the Aviva Premiership would be short-lived, but instead they have built on the firm foundations to propel themselves as one of the rising forces within the English and European game.

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale has told his players to take nothing for granted when they take on Blackpool in the League Two play-off final on Sunday.

The Grecians secured a spot in the final by scoring a 95th-minute winner against Carlisle United at St James Park on Thursday, May 18, but Tis has warned his players to come down from the elation of that moment as the job is not complete yet.

Having got City to Wembley twice before in the Conference play-off finals when they lost to Morecambe 2-1 in 2007 and then beat Cambridge United a year later, Tis has experienced the...

Waldrom out to finish the job

Thomas Waldrom is ready to put the seal on a season of hard graft by helping Exeter Chiefs to lift the Aviva Premiership title for the first time against Wasps tomorrow (2:30pm).

Having missed out 12 months ago due to injury as his club-mates were edged out by Saracens in last season's end of season showpiece, the free-scoring No.8 is back in harness for the this weekend's final encounter at a packed out Twickenham.

Waldrom is no stranger to playing at English Rugby HQ, having featured there in the past for both club and country, but now he wants to help the Chiefs reach...

Exeter Chiefs star Jack Nowell admitted he was "the most nervous he has been all season" just moments before he found out he was named in the British and Irish Lions squad.

He told a networking event at Sandy Park that he had just finished a gym session and had joined his teammates for lunch when the announcement was made live on TV.

He said: “We had an hour off and I walked into the canteen and there are not normally that many people in there but, on this occasion, the whole room was full and I just though ‘oh no’!”

“I thought 'what if I am not picked'? 'This is...

She was particularly keen to join rapidly expanding Leadstoyou as they were able to demonstrate high levels of in-house digital expertise....

Play area revamped with help from the Exeter Foundation

A play area on the outskirts of Exeter has been refurbished with help from the Exeter Foundation.

£5,000 was donated towards upgrading the children’s play area in Exton, with new equipment including a multi-play unit and swings. The existing play area was becoming unsafe and the people of Exton were keen to improve the park for the increasing number of children living in the village. Exeter Foundation trustee, Alan Quantick, went to the opening of the revamped play area, which has also benefited from grants from Woodbury Parish Council, Combe Solar Farm Community and the Norman...
