SW small business eye share of nation’s £5bn Christmas Spend

Local small businesses across the South West are gearing up to take their share of a much-needed Christmas boost, as new data predicts the UK could spend £5.3 billion with small firms over the festive period, delivering critical end-of-year gains for this vital segment of the economy.

In wider positive economic signs, new data from the Small Business Saturday campaign also found Brits could spend over £23 billion in total across the UK this festive season, representing a nominal 16% year-on-year spending rise.

Station Road in Exeter to close for 9 weeks during flood defence work

The construction of the Exeter flood defence scheme is now well advanced with completion of the whole scheme expected at the end of 2018.

The scheme is a partnership between the Environment Agency, Devon County Council and Exeter City Council.

The flood defences will reduce the risk of flooding to more than 3,200 homes and businesses in Exeter.

As part of the new defences being built in the north of the city it will be necessary to close Station Road from 9 April 2018 for nine weeks.

Michelmores, the South West-based law firm established in 1887, has reported its sixth consecutive year of growth as strategic decisions and investments made in 2016/17 left the business well-placed for the future. Leading commercial waste management firm, Devon Contract Waste, has won the contract to design and implement a bespoke Zero to Landfill waste programme for Exeter-based Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, to divert more than 140 tonnes of waste from landfill each year.
