Dog owners are being warned to keep their pets under control in the countryside as the cost of insurance claims from livestock worrying has reached a record level.

New figures show the cost of dog attacks on livestock reported to leading rural insurer NFU Mutual rose by nearly 50 per cent across the UK in 2016.

Between January and April, when pregnant ewes and lambs are often grazing on low-lying pasture in areas more accessible to walkers, the cost of claims more than doubled.

LWC Drinks and Old J Spiced Rum have recently hosted six of Devon and Cornwall’s top bartenders in a cocktail-making competition at the 2017 Source Trade Show.

Extra £2.5m funding for highway drainage and rural roads

Devon’s road network is to benefit from an extra £2.5 million of funding.

Devon County Council’s Cabinet announced on Friday (10 February) plans to invest an additional £2 million in rural roads, and an extra £500,000 for highway drainage in 2017/18.

Devon has continued to maintain 97% of A and B roads in good condition, and the additional investment will be used to improve road surfaces on lower category roads across the county.

The additional funding will be used for patching and longer term repairs to add life and resilience to roads.

Burrington Estates, a developer of commercial and residential schemes in the South West, organised a fundraising event on on Friday for World Cancer Day, which fell on Saturday 4th February.

SW economy registers slower growth in January

Economic growth in the South West lost momentum at the start of 2017, while there was a strong rise in cost pressures faced by local businesses, according to the latest Lloyds Bank Regional PMI.

The South West PMI® fell to 54.8 in January, down from 58.7 in December. A PMI reading above 50 signifies growth in business activity.

Data from January showed that the pace of growth in business output and new work eased. Firms continuing to create jobs, however, albeit at a slower rate than in December.
