Thrilling fourth community futsal final

IT was a thrilling final for Exeter United who were the winners of Exeter City’s One Game One Community's fourth Futsal tournament held at the University of Exeter Sports Centre on Sunday, April 23.

Exeter United beat the team T P Mazembe, named after the Congalese football club based in Lubumbashi, 2-0.

The semi-finalists who did not make it to the final but were praised for doing well were Chorizo United who lost 2-1 to Exeter United and A C Heavitree, who lost 4-2 to T P Mazembe.

Anastasia Groom, missing since 22 April 2017, has been found safe and well in the Avon & Somerset policing area.

Firefighters tackle major blaze on Woodbury Common

Fire crews from across Devon and Somerset have been tackling a large gorse fire on Woodbury Common.

The blaze started art around 2pm today (Sunday) and smoke could be seen for miles across Exeter and Haldon Hill.

Twenty appliances were sent to tackle the flames that were fanned by high winds.

The B3180 is closed between Four Firs and Halfway Inn on the A3052.

Members of the public are asked to avoid the Woodbury area while Emergency Services deal with the fire.

Rugby fans are in for a treat this summer when a promotion-winning Exeter Chiefs squad take on a Classic Lions XV.

The tantalising game has been arranged as part of Chiefs fly-half and club legend Gareth Steenson’s testimonial year.

Tickets are on sale now for the match, which takes place on August 12.

Among the former Chiefs players who have agreed to turn out on the day are Richie Baxter, Brett Sturgess, Tommy Hayes and Chris ‘Budgie’ Budgen.

Meanwhile, England and Gloucester legend Mike Tindall has been confirmed in the Lions squad.

Exeter City scored two late goals to beat Morecambe 3-1 at St James Park and move up to fifth in the League Two table.

The Grecians took the lead in the first few minutes of the second half having had the lion's share of chances. However, they were then pegged back by a superb volley from Kevin Ellison and needed a penalty from substitute Reuben Reid to put them back in front before Liam McAlinden put the gloss on an excellent day by firing home with virtually the last kick of the match.

​​Eight of Devon’s community volunteers were honoured by the Queen last Thursday, 20 April, when they were presented with a British Empire Medal (BME).

They were presented with their awards by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon, the Queen’s representative in the county, at the Investiture at County Hall.

The eight men and women, from South Hams, North Devon, Torridge, Plymouth, Torbay and Teignbridge were all named in the New Year’s Honours List 2017.

Devon singing-songwriting sensation Joss Stone will appear at the 9th Exeter Pride, which will take place in the city on Saturday, May 13.

The ditching of proposed substantial hikes in probate fees by the Government has been welcomed by financial experts. Police are urging householders to be on their guard for a gang of rogue traders targeting elderly people in Plymouth and Exeter.
