Waste and recycling collections suspended in Exeter

Due to the dangerous wintry conditions, Exeter City Council’s waste and recycling collections have been suspended today, Monday 19 March. Although most of the main roads are clear, pavements and side roads are slippery, which means a significant risk of injury to members of the public and the workforce. Refuse vehicles weigh 20 tonnes and the Council can't risk driving on unsafe roads. The Council plan to catch up with today’s missed collections on Saturday 24 March. Major road network improving but disruption throughout the day expected

Large parts of the major road network are passable and improving, but disruption to travel should be expected throughout the day and into tomorrow.

Devon’s main routes are improving, but minor roads especially on high ground will remain impassable today.

Over half of local employers struggling to hire skilled staff

More than half (56%) of South West firms are reporting difficulty recruiting skilled staff, and a third (33%) have seen increased staff turnover since June 2016, according to a new employment and skills study from Lloyds Banking Group and London business membership organisation, London First. The study sought to analyse the impact of Brexit on business recruitment and access to skills across the UK. Police are continuing to advise drivers in Devon and Cornwall to only travel if absolutely necessary due to snow and icy conditions.

A Met Office Amber Warning remains in place with freezing conditions and further snowfall expected in the region into Monday (19 March).

Local school children hopped aboard Stagecoach’s revamped ‘Big Beach Bus’ to celebrate its start of service for 2018.

The open-top ‘Big Beach Bus’ hit the road earlier than normal this year to coincide with the opening of Devon Cliffs Holiday Park for its new season. The 95 route connects the Park, located at Sandy Bay, with World of Country Life, Littleham, Exmouth sea front and Exmouth town centre.

Devon is on alert again for the possibility of another bout of snow this weekend.

YMCA Exeter raises record amount for young homeless

Local people helped to raise over £30,000 for YMCA Exeter at a local fundraising on Saturday 10th March that saw them sleep out for the night in Barnfield Crescent.

More than 40 people took part in the annual Sleep Easy event, helping to raise money but also awareness of the work of the local youth charity. Participants paid an entry fee of £10 and were sleeping on DIY cardboard beds.

It was all part of a national YMCA Sleep Easy Week that saw YMCAs across the country come together over seven days to promote their work with young people.
