Deadline nears for Devon community project prize

Community organisations across Devon are being reminded that they have just a further three weeks in which to enter the Prince of Wales award, and with it the chance of winning £1,000 to boost their funds.

The Prince of Wales Award is offered annually by the Devon County Agricultural Association for community initiatives in Devon aimed at boosting local sustainability.

City Council unveils new housing strategy

A new strategy aimed at tackling housing issues in Exeter is set to be unveiled.

Exeter City Council’s Housing Strategy will go before members of its Scrutiny Community Committee on 1 March.

Launched at a time when the government is heavily promoting greater levels of owner occupation as the solution to the housing crisis, the Council’s strategy adopts a wider approach and aims to address a greater range of housing needs over the next four years.

Teignbridge budget builds resilience for future

Final budget decisions outline how Teignbridge District Council will continue to face up to increased demand for services and reduced central funding.

At a meeting of the Full Council on Tuesday 23 February it was agreed to increase its share of the council tax by an extra £5 per year. This means the Teignbridge share of the bill will be £155.17 in the coming financial year - an increase of 3.33%. This represents an increase of just 9.6p per week on a Band D property.

It is the first time since 2010 that Teignbridge has increased its share of the council tax.

East Devon council tax rise approved

For the last five years, East Devon District Council has frozen its share of the Council Tax, keeping bills down for its residents while still providing first rate services.

Due to continued reductions in the central government grant to district councils, the council unanimously decided last night (Weds 24th Feb) to increase Council Tax by £5 a year for 2016/17 which amounts to less than 10p per week for the average property.

Lidl UK recalls Mars and Snickers bars

Lidl UK has taken the precautionary step of recalling Mars 6-pack chocolate bars (270g) and Snickers 6-pack chocolate bars (300g), supplied by Mars Chocolate Germany, because they may contain pieces of plastic.

This means the products are a possible risk to health.

The Lidl UK recall from consumers concerns only the products below, with the stated 'best before' dates, which were manufactured in the Netherlands and supplied to Lidl UK stores by Mars Chocolate Germany.

D&C Police given good bill of health by HMIC

Devon and Cornwall Police has received a ‘Good’ rating of performance from independent inspectors.

Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary, (HMIC), today, Thursday February 25, 2016, publishes its Annual PEEL report looking at policing effectiveness, efficiency, and legitimacy.

The report says Devon and Cornwall Police keeps people safe, reduces crime, understands the needs of local communities and works well with partner agencies.
