A public consultation has been launched today (Friday 3 October) by Devon County Council on proposed savings to its highways and traffic management service budget.
The County Council has already reduced its highways revenue budget by £18.5 million since 2010. However, it now needs to cut a further £3.4 million in 2015/16 as part of the £100 million savings required by 2017, due to the ongoing austerity measures imposed by the coalition Government.

Police are appealing for the public’s help to find a missing Taunton man who may be in the Devon and Cornwall area. William Douglas, 52, has not been seen since 7am on Wednesday 1 October when he left for work, which he did not attend.
He was reported missing to police who have been conducting enquiries to locate him. William is described as white, 5ft 11ins tall, with grey hair and a Scottish accent. Exeter City Council has launched a major public consultation as it looks to save a further £4 million over the next three years.
The authority wants to find out what services are most important to the people of Exeter at a time of deepening public spending cuts.

Crediton’s new £8.5 million link road has opened to traffic following an official ceremony yesterday (Wednesday 1 October).
Devon County Council Chairman Councillor George Gribble unveiled a ceremonial plaque at the new road, known as Wellparks Hill, and the road opened soon after.
Construction of the 760 metre single carriageway started in July 2013. The completed road now provides a new direct route to the Lords Meadow Industrial Estate from the Wellparks roundabout on the A377, and also includes a shared cycleway and footway.
Work is progressing on developing the route of the proposed walking and cycling trail between Sidbury and Sidford.
Following the response from the public exhibitions for the proposals, the results have shown that there was overwhelming support for an improved pedestrian/cycleway facility linking the two communities – with approximately 80% of those who responded “strongly supporting” the scheme.
