New Premier Inn starts recruiting staff

The new seafront hotel for Exmouth, Premier Inn, has started recruiting for staff and is looking for local people to fill the equivalent of 23 posts following the successful recruitment of a manager and assistant manager.

Following the sale of the former Elizabeth Hall to Whitbread plc as part of the regeneration of Exmouth seafront the 60-bed hotel is being built and will open on 2 March 2015.

The UK’s major energy suppliers have launched a nationwide campaign to help reunite customers with cash owed to them by their former energy supplier.

Stagecoach rated UK's most admired public transport group

Stagecoach Group is one of the top 20 most admired businesses in the UK, according to an authoritative annual survey of corporate reputation.

The transport group, which operates bus and rail services in the UK and North America, was rated 20th out of nearly 240 businesses across 24 sectors in the Britain’s Most Admired Companies (BMAC) 2014 Awards.

Stagecoach was ranked above well-known businesses including Marks and Spencer, Alliance Boots, BT Group, Coca-Cola Enterprises, and Rolls-Royce.

Exploring the impact of TASERs

Social Scientists at the University of Exeter have called for a greater comparative analysis of the impact of TASERs used in law enforcement. The next generation of the electric-shock weapon used by police forces in England and Wales is currently under review. The research published in the Oxford Journal of Policing / Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice suggests that in order to evaluate the impact of TASERs, better data collection on other force, such as batons and irritant spray, used by the police would assist in providing a clearer understanding of the impact on officer safety...

Biking Santas make a sight for sore eyes!

There was a sight to see around Exeter on Sunday for those doing some Christmas shopping as over a hundred motorbikers dressed as Santas, elves, reindeer and even a festive banana went through the city in convoy, taking part in a festive ride with a difference. The riders were on their way from their meeting place at Exeter Services to deliver piles of Christmas toys they were donating to youngsters with life-limiting illnesses at the Little Bridge Children’s Hospice South West in North Devon.

Plans submitted for Friends Life site

F&C REIT, on behalf of Friends Life, has submitted a series of planning applications to deliver a major residential-led, mixed-use redevelopment of a vacant and obsolete office complex at Clyst St Mary, near Exeter.

BBC extends late TV news bulletins

The BBC is to double the amount of time for the regional news across England in the flagship BBC One 10pm news hour.

The extension will run from January until after the UK General Election in May 2015.

The increase in time devoted to news from the regions is intended to ensure that BBC audiences receive the most comprehensive coverage of the issues facing the country, both nationally and locally, ahead of the 2015 Election.

Teenager dies after falling from ladder

Police and the Health and Safety Executive are carrying out an investigation into the death of a teenager in Newton Abbot.

Officers were called at 1pm on Thursday 4 December after reports a 17-year-old boy had fallen from a ladder in Abbotskerswell.

The teenager, from the South Devon area, was taken by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital with serious head and back injuries and passed away in hospital on Friday 5 December.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.
