Keep warm and well this winter

As the colder weather sets in, Devon’s health chiefs are providing some top tips to staying healthy this winter.

Devon County Council’s Director of Public Health, Dr Virginia Pearson, is reminding people of some simple ways to protect themselves, and their NHS, over the cold weather period.

“Most of us experience colds and flu-like symptoms at this time of year,” said Dr Pearson. “But for some, flu can be dangerous, if not potentially fatal, so it’s important that eligible people keep up to date with their flu jabs.

1st Pinhoe Guides coffee morning

The 1st Pinhoe Guides are holding a coffee morning and book sale to raise funds towards their trip to Switzerland later this year.

Photography project exhibition in Exeter

Serious collision closes Woodbury road

Update 6.30pm: The B3180 has re-opened.

Police have closed the B3180 after a serious collision bewteen two cars earlier this afternoon.

The collision happened at the junction of Hulham Road, between Woodbury and Exmouth.

The road is closed in both directions and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Police say the road is likely to remain closed for some time.

Devon & Cornwall Police ready for Rugby World Cup in Exeter

It is now officially Rugby World Cup Year in Exeter and across the UK.

Devon and Cornwall Police have been planning for this prestigious event since March 2014. A specialist team of officers has been working with management at Sandy Park rugby stadium and with a multitude of partner agencies including England 2015, the world cup organisers, and local authorities.

Placing Exeter on the world stage means that the team has planned for the security of visiting heads of state and politicians from around the world, and are aware of any potential risks.

Snow and ice set to return this weekend

Sleet and snow is forecast for Devon as temperatures are set to drop below freezing this weekend and into next week.

A severe weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for tomorrow (Saturday), valid from 3am until lunchtime.

A forecaster at the Met Office said: “A band of rain, sleet and snow will spread east across the region on Saturday morning. 2cm-4cm of snow is likely to fall on high ground, chiefly over the moors, but there is a risk of some snow at lower levels.

Plans underway for second stage of superfast broadband roll out

Connecting Devon & Somerset (CDS) has announced that it will be publishing the tender for the second stage of the superfast broadband programme across the region by early February.

The announcement comes as the current programme gathers significant momentum with over 400 cabinets and nearly 100,000 homes and businesses connected to fibre. In addition, some 2,500 individuals and businesses have attended events as part of the Get up to Speed programme, which is designed to help them get the most out of faster broadband.

New research reveals that that one in six people in Britain have kept secrets from their loved ones by hiding or lying about rent or mortgage troubles.
