New research shows that concerns about governmental failure to act effectively and fairly in the aftermath of extreme weather events can affect the degree to which residents are willing to protect themselves.
The findings of a team led by scientists at the University of Exeter could prove key to establishing how society should evolve to cope with more turbulent weather and more frequent mega storms.
The team examined attitudes in Cumbria in north west England and Galway in western Ireland, which were both hit by heavy flooding in November 2009. Record...

In the first quarter of 2009/10 only one per cent of CAB debt casework clients had at least one payday loan and in the same quarter last year this had risen to four per cent...

In true British spirit, the establishments along Exeter's Quay, many of which my family and I frequent on a regular basis, were open as normal today despite the imminent threat of flooding. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for heavy rain for the region and is warning the public to be prepared for flooding, with the Environment Agency, Devon County Council and Police warning Devon to be prepared, restrict journeys to the essential, keep an eye on flood alerts and don't drive through flood water.

Reinforced dams at either side of the breach are holding up.
Pumps are also removing water from the eastern end and western end of the canal to help regulate canal water levels.
Depth of the water, and the condition of the embankment is being constantly monitored, and the Council is hoping to reopen the road from Halberton to Sampford Peverell later this afternoon,...
