Road closures for link road work

Another major lift is planned to take place at the South Devon Link Road site this weekend, as the next set of bridge beams are lifted into place.

On Thursday night (21 August) a large crane will begin to lift a series of steel bridge beams, measuring up to 30 metres long, into position at Hamelin Way, Torquay. This operation will take place over three nights with a fourth night, Sunday 24 August, being available as a contingency.

Tour of Britain to re-visit popular locations

Devon will have featured in The Friends Life Tour of Britain more times than any other venue outside of London when it hosts Stage Five on Thursday 11 September.

Police crackdown on illegal raves

Devon and Cornwall Police are fully prepared to prevent and disrupt any illegal rave activity across the two counties this coming August Bank Holiday. In summer months the counties can be vulnerable to illegal incursions and raves, such as the problems encountered at Bellever and Davidstowe in the past. This new walking festival will run for 6 days with a choice of two lengths of walk each day in and around the town of Sidmouth and the stunning Jurassic Coast in East Devon.

Courts wasted an estimated £230 million of taxpayers’ money last year by needlessly locking up people on remand, figures published by the Howard League for Penal Reform reveal today. During 2013, more than 35,000 people who had been remanded in custody went on to be either acquitted or given non-custodial sentences. The money spent on keeping them in prison would have been enough to build 16 new secondary schools, pay 10,000 nurses for a year, or reverse the government’s cuts to the criminal legal aid budget.
