Ashley completes 24 hour challenge

A Devon businesswoman has carried out 24 tasks in 24 hours to raise £2,000 for the Exeter Foundation.

Starting with swimming across the River Exe, and finishing 24 hours later with a sky dive, Ashley Petrons took on an array of tasks for the round the clock fundraiser in Exeter.

A training session with the Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park, selling the Big Issue, serving breakfast at the Southgate Mercure Exeter Hotel, and a bake off with Little French Cakes at Intoto Kitchens were all successfully completed by 28-year-old Ashley, of PR and marketing firm Astley Media.

Sights set on man’s best friend

Staff from an Exeter opticians are going canine-crazy for Guide Dogs Week with a visit from a furry friend and a range of activities in-store.

Specsavers in Exeter is hosting a main fundraising event on 10 October, with the chance for people to come and say hello to a guide dog and talk to a local guide dog owner about eye health.

The store are raising money for the charity throughout this week to raise as much as possible for the cause.

Age UK Exeter 2015 10k Race is NOW open for entries

1,000 places available.

Every pound raised will help us improve the lives of older people in Exeter.

This is the only 10k Race in Exeter with a City Centre start and our 2015 route will take runners up the High Street, down Paris Street, Western Way and on to the Exeter Quayside. From here it's a beautiful and flat stretch along rivers and canals finishing at the Piazza Terracina. This race will suit regular runners and beginners due to the relatively flat terrain.

To mark the centenary of World War One, pianist Alex Wilson will perform a musical tribute to composers whose lives were cut tragically short during the Great War at his latest concert to be held in the Mint Methodist Church, Exeter on October 18th at 7.30pm. Profits from the concert will be donated to the British Red Cross.

The concert, entitled The Banks of Green Willow, features much loved favourites by Ravel, Bridge and Ivor Gurney, a new work by James Whittle and a series of rarely heard miniatures by composers all killed in action.

Worrying increase in debt problems among Exeter residents

There has been a dramatic upsurge in debt worries among people in the Exeter area, according to new figures released by StepChange Debt Charity. In the first six months of this year, 648 residents in the Exeter postcode area sought debt advice from the charity’s helpline compared to 580 in the same period last year, an increase of 12 per cent.

The figures point to a further strain on household budgets, with those contacting the charity from the Exeter area an average of £11 per month worse off than the same time last year. The average person in Exeter seeking the charity’s help was...

A polar bear called Bjorn is coming to the English Riviera – for one day.

Bjorn is a life-size and incredibly life-like animatronic. The huge, hi-tech puppet will perform three 20-minute shows at 11.00am, 2.00pm and 3.30pm on Wednesday 29th October.

Bjorn is playful, mischievous and extremely huggable, and is just about kept in check by Arctic explorer Ursula. Their science-based show has been performed at events such as BT Young Scientist of the Year, Cambridge Science Week, W5 Science Centre & World Oceans Day.

An Exeter School sixth former has helped raise valuable funds for local charity, the Devon Air Ambulance Trust, by organising a World Cup-themed charity day and raising over £3,000.

Upper Sixth Former Emily Ackland first got hooked on fund raising when she cycled from London to Paris last summer raising over £11,000 for PAPYRUS.

She said it was then that she experienced the satisfying feeling of fundraising for charity.

"It is very fulfilling to know that you are helping others whilst also pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone," said Emily.

Community eats their way to new defibrillator

Kingswear’s popular Manna from Devon Cooking School was buzzing on the evening of Thursday 25th September. Co-owners Holly and David Jones hosted a charity pop up supper at the cooking school to raise money to help equip the village with a community defibrillator. The well-attended event raised an impressive £600 to go towards this.

Paignton Zoo has teamed up with Wollen Michelmore Solicitors to hold Will Week. The event - from 6th to 11th October – is an appropriate one for the Zoo, as the charity has received many significant legacies over the years.

Paignton Zoo fundraiser Jenny Paton: “Our Ape Centre – home to gorillas and orang utans, including babies Tatau and Natalia – was built thanks to a legacy. Another sum built a whole set of owl aviaries. It is a very important way for a charity like ours to receive funds.”
