University to host open mental health event

Helping people recover from extreme stress or psychological trauma will be the focus of a public event at the University of Exeter on Saturday (20 May).

People who have suffered extreme stress or psychological trauma, or who have seen relatives go through this, are among those invited to the event.

It is open to anyone with an interest in these areas, including charity and healthcare workers, policy experts and people who want to join community support networks.

HRH The Queen is undoubtedly the most famous horse owner to compete at this year’s Devon County Show taking place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (May 18-20) at Westpoint, Exeter.

The Queen is entering a Highland pony and a Riding Horse in two classes within a packed equine programme which starts at 7am on Thursday morning.

National charity Action on Hearing Loss is urging people to abandon any stereotypes they might have about the 11 million people living with hearing loss in the UK and help bridge the communication gap for Deaf Awareness Week.

According to the charity, more than 900,000 people in the UK are severely deaf; 24,000 use sign language as their main language; and due to our ageing population by 2035 it is estimated that 15.6 million people will have some form of hearing loss.

Last Thursday the City Gate hosted an official launch party to celebrate the venue’s new look.

Castle Drogo appoints new contractor to complete conservation project

The National Trust has appointed a new contractor to complete the third and final phase of the five year project repairing and conserving Castle Drogo. Dӕdalus Conservation will be picking up the reigns to continue work making the castle watertight and structurally sound, after the previous contractor went into administration last year.

The firm, who have over 25 years of experience managing conservation building work, will be taking the project to completion, starting work at the castle in May this year. Now well over half way, the project is scheduled to finish by the end of 2018...

Overnight closures planned for Bridge Road

Overnight road closures are planned for Bridge Road in Exeter over four consecutive evenings later this month.

The road will be closed each night from Monday 22 May to Thursday 25 May, closing at 8:30pm and re-opening by 5:30am the following morning on each occasion.

The final sections of steelwork for the Countess Wear pedestrian and cycle bridge will be installed during these overnight closures.
