Exeter pushing for improved railway links for the city

Exeter City Council has welcomed the news that Transport Minister Simon Burns is to consider electrifying a further stretch of railway line, from Newbury to Westbury. The line from Paddington to Newbury is already set to be wired, together with the line to Bristol and South Wales, as part of the current electrification programme.

"Exeter needs a modern railway to maintain its competitive edge, and electrification to Westbury would be a big step in the right direction," said Council Leader Pete Edwards.

With the enforced cash ban upon us, paying for small amounts of scrap just isn’t viable, what with the admin time and cost of cheques!!

At all of our depots, G H Newbery & Son Ltd – Exeter, G H Newbery & Son (Honiton) Ltd, E B Janes Ltd (Tiverton & Minehead), Gorman Metals Ltd – Newton Abbot, and Quarry Breakers (Paignton) Ltd, are giving our customers the opportunity to ‘donate’ their scrap to charity. Our charity account at present is the Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

If you would like to do this, quite simply turn up at any of our depots and let the weighbridge...

Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw talks about his life in politics

Exeter College student Adam Kelly talks to Ben Bradshaw about his life in Parliament and his 15 years as Exeter's MP.

Q: When you first entered Parliament, in 1997, what was the first thing you tried to achieve?

BB: Well I had a private member’s bill in that first year, which was very lucky. I came quite high up in the ballot. And I managed to get my private member’s bill onto the statue book, which was quite unusual if you know anything about private member’s bills. It was not a hugely significant piece of legislation, but it was about giving the public more...

Rail protests against South West fare hikes

Average train fares have risen nearly three times faster than wages since the recession began, according to new analysis published today (Tuesday 11th December) by the TUC’s Action for Rail campaign.

The research shows that between 2008 and 2012 average rail fares increased by 26.6 per cent, with average wages rising by just 9.6 per cent over the same period – well below the rate of inflation.

Train fares are set to outpace wages and inflation again in 2013 after the Association of Train Operating Companies announced a 3.9 per cent increase in average prices last week, with...

The essentials to put in your training journal

I am trying to emphasise the importance of keeping a journal with the young athletes I coach. By recording what you are doing, you can measure progress, see what works, see what doesn't work and also change behaviour.

It is well known that people do not realise what is actually going on in their lives. They classically under report how much alcohol they drink, how much food they eat and over report how much exercise they do.

One young player I coach said he didn't play well in a Volleyball match, his legs were tired. When asked what might have caused this, he thought about...

Look before you book - don't let food poisoning ruin Xmas

People eating out in Exeter this Christmas should check out the restaurant or pub's food hygiene rating before they study the menu.

"If there is no sticker on the door or window of the restaurant, diners either need to ask themslves why this is the case or question the restaurant manager. Anyone who has a good rating of three or above has nothing to hide!" said Cllr Greg Sheldon, Lead Councillor for Environment and Leisure.

Environmental health oficers from the City Council carry out regular inspections of all eateries and places that sell food in Exeter. The results of...
