CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has today (December 12th) organised the biggest campaigning event in its 40-year history as over 1,200 of its members – as well as other members of the beer and pub industry – descend on Parliament for a Mass Lobby, calling for an end to the damaging beer duty escalator.
Members of the organisation have travelled from across the UK to speak to their MP as new figures show that since the beer duty escalator – a policy causing duty on beer to automatically increase by 2% above inflation every year – was introduced in 2008, the number of regular pub...

Tap dancing and jazz in the Cathedral? Christmas Jazz last Saturday, presented by Exeter Festival Chorus with soloist Jacqui Dankworth and the Big Buzzard Boogie Band, led by Andy Williamson, was the most joyous, exciting musical and spiritual experience. Jacqui Dankworth's perfectly modulated and clear voice transfixed us with the beauty of her sound and exquisite interpretation. Her voice has matured and developed so that she equals her mother Cleo Laine's range and expression, but absolutely asserts her individual style.
We were led by the musical director and conductor Nigel...
Exeter City Council has welcomed the news that Transport Minister Simon Burns is to consider electrifying a further stretch of railway line, from Newbury to Westbury. Exeter College student Adam Kelly talks to Ben Bradshaw about his life in Parliament and his 15 years as Exeter's MP.
Q: When you first entered Parliament, in 1997, what was the first thing you tried to achieve?
BB: Well I had a private member’s bill in that first year, which was very lucky. I came quite high up in the ballot. And I managed to get my private member’s bill onto the statue book, which was quite unusual if you know anything about private member’s bills. It was not a hugely significant piece of legislation, but it was about giving the public more...
Average train fares have risen nearly three times faster than wages since the recession began, according to new analysis published today (Tuesday 11th December) by the TUC’s Action for Rail campaign.

Train fares are set to outpace wages and inflation again in 2013 after the Association of Train Operating Companies announced a 3.9 per cent increase in average prices last week, with...
