Construction giant Midas goes into administration

Business leaders in Devon have been reacting to the news that one of the UK’s biggest privately owned construction companies has gone out of business – affecting a number of public sector projects in the county.

Midas Group Limited has offices across south west England and Wales including in Exeter in Newton Abbot.

A contract with Torbay Council to build an £11 million Premier Inn is now threatened but the council said it will work with stakeholders to make sure it is delivered.

Anti-social behaviour in Exeter remains high

Anti-social behaviour in Exeter is continuing at an “unreasonable” level, leading to a tightening of the city’s public space protection order.

The order, known as a PSPO, which outlaws certain types of anti-social behaviour in the city centre, was introduced in June 2017. It applies to everyone but currently only people in groups of two or more can be dispersed.

Exeter care home resident celebrates 101st birthday

A resident at RMBI Care Co. Cadogan Court, in Exeter, has celebrated her 101st birthday.

Janet Wigmore enjoyed a party at the Home with fellow residents. The staff, determined to ensure that she had a memorable birthday, arranged a celebration at lunchtime with flowers, balloons and a delicious cake.

£2k raised for charity in eye-catching McDonald's Exeter refurbishment

McDonald’s Marsh Barton officially reopened on 3 February following an extensive refurbishment.

The new restaurant boasts all the latest innovations from McDonald’s, including a side-by-side drive thru and improved kitchen facilities.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Councillor Trish Oliver and the local franchisee and owner, David Shawyer.

Exeter Valley Park set for upgrade

A Devon-based conservation charity is set to make ‘substantial’ improvements to one of Exeter’s most beautiful green spaces.

Barley Valley Park – one of six Valley Parks in Exeter managed by Devon Wildlife Trust on behalf of their owners, Exeter City Council – will undergo a series of improvements this spring to improve access for local people and other visitors.

Debbie Coles is a nursing degree apprentice from Exeter studying at the University of Plymouth’s Exeter School of Nursing. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has authorised Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine for use in the UK.

Staff and residents at Cumberland Grange in Exeter welcomed in the Year of the Tiger with a day of celebrations and activities.

250,000 adults in the South West whose mental health got worse during the pandemic have not spoken to anyone about it

Nearly one in five adults surveyed in the South West (17 per cent) who say their mental health got worse during the pandemic haven’t spoken to anyone about it during this time – equivalent to around 250,000 people – according to research published today. More than a third (38 per cent) of all respondents in the South West reported a worsening in their mental health during the pandemic. Of those who have been concerned about the mental health of someone they care about, almost one in five (19 per cent) say they haven’t tried to talk to them about it.
