Christmas Shoeboxes!

A rush of Christmas generosity has seen more than 250 shoeboxes stuffed full of gifts for people in poverty-stricken Moldova delivered to Cartridges Solicitors in Cowick Street, Exeter after the firm volunteered to collect them on behalf of the CR2EE charity.

Kathy Hulland at Cartridges said: "None of us can cure all the ills in the world, but there is one small corner who will be celebrating an extra special Christmas this year thanks to the amazing generosity of the people in Exeter with a very big heart!"

Public inquiry into East Devon's Local Plan

A major public inquiry into the East Devon’s new Local Plan will begin in February.

The Draft Local Plan submitted by East Devon District Council (EDDC) includes detailed expectations for the future of the districts seven towns.

It also covers many issues in the area including Housing and Affordable Housing, Employment, Tourism and Retail, Climate Change, Gypsies & Travellers and the Natural Environment. A 19-day examination of the plan by Government Inspector Anthony Thickett will air the details of the plan to the public.

It’s been another eventful year for the city, with the announcement that the Rugby World Cup is coming to Exeter in 2015, putting the city on the world map and giving thousands of fans the chance to see what Exeter has to offer.

Our visitors this year included their Royal Highnesses the Earl and Countess of Wessex, to open the new sport facilities on the Quay and to attend the Two Moors Musical festival concert in the Cathedral. The Cycling Tour of Britain brought Sir Bradley Wiggins speeding through the city on the way to Dartmoor.

Young environmentalists from Alphington Primary School are among the first children to visit the WWF Experience in the charity’s new headquarters in Woking.

Along with seven other schools from around the country, Exeter’s Alphington Primary School was invited to attend a special event as part of the charity’s Green Ambassador scheme.

The Green Ambassador scheme aims to encourage a new generation of sustainability champions within schools.

Government caps parking charges

The government has capped all parking penalty charges and launched a consultation into aggressive parking policy as part of support package to help boost high streets and city centres.

The cap will come into immediate effect in all government parking enforcement ahead of further consultation into local authority parking policies.

The consultation announced by Communities Sectary Eric Pickles could see local businesses get the right to challenge councils over the number and locations of Double-Yellow lines in towns and cities.

E.ON raise prices by £48 per bill

E.ON energy has announced that they are raising their gas and electricity prices by around £48 per customer.

The changes will see around 4m UK energy customers pay more

The price represents an average price rise of 3.7% on dual gas and electricity bills and will come into effect from January 18 2014.

Electricity only bills will also rise by 3.7% (£20) while Gas only bills will rise by 4.2% (£37) for the average customer.

Cap on student recruitment lifted for all universities

The Chancellor has announced that all limits on university recruitment will be lifted in 2015. This unexpected decision means that universities will be allowed to recruit as many students as they want to.

Describing it as an “arbitrary cap on aspiration”, George Osborne announced that an extra 30,000 places at English universities will be created in 2014-15. Crowds have gathered in South Africa to mourn the death of Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa. Mr Mandela 95 was a world-wide hero whose struggle for freedom against Apartheid and later leading the nation to re-build and reconcile after decades of injustice was an inspiration to millions. Six new Stagecoach buses to serve East Devon route

Stagecoach South West announced today that customers travelling on routes 56 (Exeter – Exeter Airport – Woodbury – Exmouth) and 157 (Exmouth – Budleigh Salterton – Newton Poppleford – Sidmouth) are receiving an early Christmas present – six brand new buses!

The first three of the single deckers enter service today (Thursday 5th December 2013) and the remainder are due to arrive prior to Christmas.
