Roadside jewellery scam arrives in Exeter

Exeter City Police have warned that scammers who use shoddy jewellery to cheat people out of cash have arrived in the area.

The scam typically sees scammers flag down motorists by the side of the road beside supposedly broken down cars claiming to need cash for fuel.

Often jewellery is offered as security against for a loan of the money with claims that the value outweighs the money lent.

But in most cases the jewellery turns out to be worthless and sees the victims holding shoddy jewellery in place of their money.

Further £2.5m cut from Police budget

The funding of major national policing projects will be shared by police forces across the UK and that means a further budget cut of £2.5m for Devon and Cornwall Police.

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has now confirmed that next year’s budget will be reduced by £2.5m, the money going to the expansion of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, the College of Policing and HM Inspectorate of Constabulary. The region must also help pay for a new police Innovation Fund .

Scoring your first try for your club is always a special mention, but Dave Lewis admitted his celebrations were somewhat curtailed by the fact Exeter Chiefs slipped to a last-gasp defeat at Aviva Premiership rivals London Wasps.

A glimmer of hope on the weather front

Fed up of the wet and windy weather? Take heart, there is a glimmer of hope.

The Met Office says that over the next few days the winds will ease and the showers will become less intense.

However, it's unlikely that there will be any rain free days in the run up to the weekend.

Marine A launches appeal on conviction

Marine A, Sgt. Alexander Blackman from Taunton has launched an appeal to overturn his conviction and sentence for the murder of an injured insurgent prisoner.

Blackman was convicted a military court martial in November for the murder of an injured insurgent while a member of the Devon based Royal Marines.

The 39-year-old Blackman received a sentence of 10 years for after video evidence showed him shooting dead a badly injured man with a 9mm handgun

He is also heard saying: “It’s nothing you wouldn’t do for us.” and “Go on, shuffle off this mortal coil you ****.”...

Search continues for missing teenager

Police and other emergency services will today (Tuesday) continue their search for Devon teenager Harry Martin who went missing during last week's storms.

A 20-mile-stretch of coastline, ten miles either side of Harry’s home at Membland, Newton Ferrers, has been extensively searched as well as inland areas with the help of a range of groups and emergency services. Safety to be improved in Leat Street, Tiverton

A new zebra crossing is to be installed on the A3126 in Tiverton.

Work on the Devon County Council scheme, which will create a crossing at Leat Street, is due to start on Monday 13 January.

Crossing Leat Street is difficult for pedestrians at present, due to limited visibility of traffic exiting the roundabout with Kennedy Way.

The crossing is south of this roundabout and will provide a walking route linking the western area of Tiverton to the hospital, Tiverton High Street and Petroc Community College.

Workplace injuries total matches population of a small village

In 2012 the number of people hurt in a work accident in East Devon was 549 – that’s equivalent to the entire population of Musbury.

Injuries ranged from broken bones, back injuries, amputated fingers and head injuries caused by slips and trips, falls from height and becoming trapped in machinery.

East Devon District Council is part of a project to help small businesses improve the way they manage health, safety and fire risks, with an initiative to be launched on Honiton’s Heathpark Estate.

30ft waves as Storm "Hercules" hits Devon

Forecasters are warning that waves upwards of 30ft as “Winter Storm Hercules” hits Devon. The storm has been confirmed to be the same weather system responsible for the recent “Deep-Freeze” in the US by the Met Office.

The latest storm is expected to see 60mph and 70mph winds and higher than usual waves.
