500 day countdown to Rugby World Cup

Exeter Chiefs players, school children and city representatives revealed a giant calendar at Sandy Park yesterday (Tuesday May 6) to mark 500 days to go to Rugby World Cup 2015.

The calendar revealed the date when tickets for all 48 matches, including three fixtures at Sandy Park, will go on sale to the general public: September 12, with the application window closing on September 29, 2014. From September 12, members of the public will be able to select the matches they want to attend across the country and in Cardiff, with any oversubscribed matches balloted.

A teenager from Tiverton, who overcame illness to ensure the future of her BMX team, has been named as the first-ever young winner of a new volunteering award by Prime Minister David Cameron. Sixteen-year-old Molly Pattison first got involved with Tiverton BMX Go-Ride club a couple of years ago and got stuck into racing. Sadly, at age 14, she was diagnosed with acute demyelination and was no longer able to ride her bike as her balance was affected. Run organisers announce local partnership

Organisers of Exeter’s Great West Run, sponsored by Tozers Solicitors, are pleased to announce a new local partnership with Newtown Community Association for 2014. Academics from Geography at the University of Exeter have played an important role in The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s most recent report.

This second part of the IPCC’s assessment considers how the changing climate impacts on people and the natural world and suggests options for how to deal with these issues through adapting the economy, infrastructure and society.

Exeter streetlights to switch off this week

Around 1,200 streetlights in residential streets in St Thomas and Exwick will be converted to part-night lighting this week (Thursday 8 May). Streetlights previously on all-night will be switched off from about 12:30am to 5:30am, before coming on again until dawn. The change is the latest phase of Devon County Council’s controversial programme to reduce costs and carbon emissions, having already converted over 44,000 residential street lights across the county. An Exeter School Senior Royal Navy cadet has been awarded the Jack Sadler Award for outstanding contribution to the combined cadet force contingent (CCF).

Cox'n and Deputy Head Girl Tilly Gilbert was presented with the brass trophy of an artillery shell case and an engraved medal during the biennial inspection by Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, who is Commandant of all Air Cadets in UK.

A Devon community project has won this year’s Prince of Wales Award for its work in tackling isolation, loneliness and ill health in rural communities.

The Community Support Group, based in the village of Newton St Cyres near Crediton and sees volunteers offered assistance to local people as part of the Neighbourhood Health Watch Scheme. The biggest ever guide to Exeter was published this weekend offering tourists an array of places to visit and stay in what is fast becoming one of the region’s top city break destinations.

Latest figures confirm that in total almost £187m was spent by visitors whilst on holiday in the city (2012).

Spend by UK holidaymakers staying overnight in Exeter increased from £66m to £80m and for overseas visitors from £30.2m to £38.7m (between 2011 and 2012). In just four years, spend by overseas visitors in Exeter has almost doubled, from £20.9m in 2009 to £38.7m in 2012.
