The fifth National Eye Health Week will take place on 22 – 28 September 2014.

The week aims to raise awareness of the importance of good eye health and the need for regular sight tests for all. 20 million people in the UK could be at risk of avoidable sight loss because they fail to have regular sight tests. Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss yet over half of sight loss can be avoided.

Renaissance Villages celebrated a highly successful launch of their new show homes at Millbrook Village – Exeter’s first luxury retirement village – which were officially opened on Saturday 6th September by TV and radio presenter, Nicki Chapman, who hosts many popular TV programmes including Escape to the Country, the RHS Chelsea Flower and Wanted Down Under.

Free tours of fascinating city buildings

Some of Exeter’s most fascinating buildings will open their doors to the public free of charge later this week for Heritage Open Days.

Many of the venues participating are not usually open to the public or otherwise charge an entry fee. Running from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 September, Heritage Open Days is a unique opportunity to explore these sometimes hidden, often curious, and always interesting places. Injured Royal Marine to represent GB

An injured Royal Marine from Exeter has been chosen to represent Britain in the rowing events at the forthcoming Invictus Games. Ray Lowrie, 33, sustained a severe fractured ankle while on Exercise in Norway that ultimately led to his leg being amputated. New app a first for Exeter hotel

The Mercure Southgate Exeter has become the first hotel in the city to offer a mobile app so guests can check in before they arrive.

Swapping queues and form-filling for a welcome in the bar or lobby, guests will just need to pick up their key at the start of their stay, at the four star hotel in Southernhay.

The Southgate Exeter is one of just 60 Accor hotels across Europe that has the new mobile App facility.

The aim, says Sales Manager Tamsyn Parsons, is to make sure guests can start enjoying their stay straight away.

On Saturday 30th August The Real McCoy customers and Pickle Shack pop-up restaurant regulars were treated to an indulgent dining experience in the quirky surrounds of McCoy’s Arcade. With a tapas theme, cocktails galore and music from raucous Klezmer influenced band Hazaar the night was an overwhelming success. Delay in re-opening fire damaged pub

The owner of a fire-ravaged Exeter pub today said it was unlikely to re-open until after Christmas.

A huge blaze tore through The Hole In The Wall in Little Castle Street in June causing thousands of pounds of damage.

Today, owner George Sloan told The Exeter Daily that the clean up operation had taken longer than expected.

"We found quite a lot of asbestos that had to be very carefully removed and that has been a long job," said George.

"However, we are starting to get there now but it's highly unlikely we'll be able to re-open before the new year."...
