Get closer to nature this half term

There are plenty of opportunities to get out and about this half term and enjoy our outstanding East Devon countryside.

Birdwatching for children on Tuesday 28 October is a free event. An interest in nature is best encouraged at the earliest possible age – that is the firm belief of East Devon District Council’s Countryside team.

Experienced and knowledgeable birdwatcher Ian Waite has kindly agreed to lead this session, aided by the Education Rangers, to help children spot and identify birds at the Axe Estuary Wetlands near Seaton. There will be two sessions; 1.30-2.30pm...

St Luke’s Campus special anniversary

The University of Exeter’s St Luke’s Campus is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year.

Originally founded as a teacher training college, the campus is now home to the University of Exeter Medical School, Sports and Health Sciences, as well as the Graduate School of Education. Saturday 18 October is St Lukes Day, and the official date of the 160th anniversary. A ‘Festival of Evensong for St Luke’ will mark the anniversary on Friday 17 October at the St Luke’s Chapel with further celebrations organised next term. One of the commonest complaints heard in the 21st century world of work is that people now have to take their work home with them. But a team member from a leading Devon environmental charity has now taken this modern phenomenon to a new level.

Day nursery opens in Broadclyst

An exciting evening was had by all at Echoes Childcare when it was officially opened by Alex Brown from Exeter Chiefs.

The children's day nursery and holiday club opened it's doors on the 1st of September and is owned by Jo Cook and Michele Stevens, two childcare professionals who had a dream to open their own nursery over 24years ago.

Echoes (Every Child has the Opportunity for an Excellent Start ) is situated at the old Broadclyst station and was formerly the Hungry Fox public house.

City golfers head for Morocco

A pair of Exeter golfers are preparing to travel to Morocco for a six-night, five-star, expenses-paid break, where they will compete for a prestigious national amateur pairs title, after qualifying from a regional final at Manor House GC, in Castle Combe, Wiltshire.

Andy Rogers, 48, and Sandy Urquhart, 23 - both members at Fingle Glen GC - have won through to the grand final of the Morocco Matchplay, powered by HowDidiDo (formerly the HowDidiDo National Matchplay Championship) to be held in February.

'Have a go' skills show

Over 1,200 young people aged 14-25 will get the chance to ‘Have a go’ at a range of skills and discover new career opportunities when ‘The Skills Show Experience’ arrives in Exeter this week.

‘Have a Go Exeter will take place at Westpoint Arena, Clyst St Mary on the 22nd October. Schools will be attending in the morning and there will be an opportunity for anyone aged 14 to 25 to come along in the afternoon between 2.30 and 5pm.

Tar Barrels

Every year on November 5th for reasons lost in antiquity, the Flaming Tar Barrels are carried through the streets of Ottery St Mary to the delight of thousands of townsfolk and visitors.

Ottery St. Mary is internationally renowned for its Tar Barrels, an old custom said to have originated in the 17th century, and which is held on November 5th each year. Each of Ottery's central public houses sponsors a single barrel. In the weeks prior to the day of the event, November 5th, the barrels are soaked with tar.
