Hunter Stoves settles into new HQ

An Exeter-based stove manufacturer and supplier has acquired new premises with the support of a tailored six-figure loan from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

Formed in 1996, after acquiring the design rights and existing stock of the Hunter Stoves brand, Hunter Stoves offers trade customers 200 different designs of wood burning and multi-fuel stoves. The 14,000 stoves the company produces each year are exported across Europe, South Africa, New Zealand and Japan.

A young transgender man is hoping to dispel often widespread misunderstanding about transgender culture with an event he is hosting in Devon.

Kay Browning from Tiverton wants others like himself and those questioning their gender identity to be accepted for who they are.

The 25-year-old who as a young girl was a majorette, but now as a man is head coach and choreographer for Tiverton Town Majorettes is working with Fixers to put on an event to promote his message.

As exclusively revealed by the Exeter Daily yesterday, David Fitzgerald is to take over the presenting slot currently occupied by Judi Spiers.

Fitz and his Producer Monica Ellis will be moving to the Mid-Morning Show on BBC Radio Devon from Monday 6 July.

The BBC also announced this afternoon that Pippa Quelch will be the new voice of Drive Time.

Pippa, who was born and grew up in Devon, will present a mixture of news, travel and music each weekday from 5pm – 7pm in her new Drive Time Show.

Exeter expertise helps underpin new cancer guidelines

Research by the University of Exeter has helped underline new national guidelines to help GPs diagnose cancer earlier, and save lives.

Professor Willie Hamilton, at the University of Exeter Medical School, was a major contributor to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’s (NICE) process to consider the latest evidence in formulating guidelines for use in general practice and healthcare settings. Two art projects celebrating the Rugby World Cup 2015 coming to Exeter have won grants from the National Lottery.

The projects showcase the cultures of the visiting nations – Namibia, Tonga, Romania, Italy and Georgia – through film and performance.

New hope for Exeter disabled workers

Devon County Council has offered to help a team of people with disabilities to remain in employment.

Earlier this year, Pluss, an organisation that supports people with disabilities in employment, announced plans to close its unit in Exeter.

The factory employed 37 people in the Exeter factory as skilled upholsterers of items such as headboards for beds, seat covers, as well as upholstery in campervans and boats.

Learn Devon and Devon Libraries have launched a new Opportunity Hub at The Hayridge, Cullompton, providing a programme of employability courses to help people develop their skills and get into work.

The Opportunity Hub will take place every Wednesday from 10.30am-12.30pm at The Hayridge, Exeter Hill, Cullompton EX15 1DJ. People can join at any time. There is no need to book, they can just turn up.

Mascots from across Devon are set to compete to become the county’s first Adventure Golf champion.
