Tesco to offer free blood pressure checks as people deprioritise routine health checks

People across Devon are being urged to encourage their loved ones to take up a free blood pressure check on Valentine’s Day.

This comes as new figures reveal many people are struggling to prioritise their health during the cost-of-living crisis.

New research released today by Tesco shows that South West people are more likely to service their cars (62%) and household boilers (56%) each year than attend a routine medical examination (24%), with 30% of people more likely to prioritise the health of their loved ones over their own health.

A Medical Sciences student whose campaign helped accelerate a number of changes to improve student safety at night has been awarded a prize, at an awards ceremony that marks students’ achievements in academia and beyond.

Buckerell Lodge to be demolished

Dozens of retirement apartments will replace a famous Exeter hotel after plans were narrowly approved.

The now-closed Buckerell Lodge on Topsham Road, which was also a well-known wedding venue, is to be demolished and replaced by 62 apartments and associated facilities.

Developer McCarthy Stone’s previous application was rejected at the start of last year, however an updated application featuring 23 two-bed apartments and 39 one-bedroom apartments was narrowly passed by the chair’s casting vote at an Exeter City...

Fin achieves more than he thought possible gaining a degree through an apprenticeship

Fin takes his apprenticeship to the next level by completing a bachelor’s degree with housing association, LiveWest.

Fin Walker, from Exeter, arrived at LiveWest as a 16-year-old eager to pursue a career in the construction industry and train as quantity surveyor.

He enrolled on a two-year course at Exeter College where he studied Construction Contracting Operations to a Level 3. Fin was then promoted from apprentice to Trainee Quantity Surveyor and enrolled on a four-year part-time Degree in Quantity Surveying alongside full-time work which he has now completed.

Local charity seeks new Treasurer

Local charity, Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI), is seeking a new Treasurer.

The current Treasurer is standing down at the end of March and the charity is looking for a replacement to take up the voluntary role.

ECI, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this summer, helps people facing poverty and inequality to get their lives back on track by involving them in community projects to improve their mental, emotional and physical wellbeing, increase their sense of belonging and provide skills to help them succeed in life.

A cafe in Exeter has become a regular meeting point for a rapidly expanding group of aspiring house and techno DJs.

So far Sunset Society cafe has hosted four successful community meet-ups giving new DJs the opportunity to spin their tunes on professional decks in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Stand by for military parade through Exeter city centre

Pomp and ceremony comes to Exeter on Saturday, as HMS Defender exercises its Freedom of the City by marching through the city centre.

The parade, which includes His Majesty’s Band of the Royal Marines, veterans and cadets, takes place at 12 noon on Saturday (11 February).

A VIP reception for guests will also take place in the Historic Guildhall.

The UK’s Ambassador to Ukraine has described how learning modern languages can be a “gateway to the world” during a special event that reflected upon the way her degree has helped shape her career.
